Happy Birthday to Me, Toyota Overheated on Me

Good evening everyone.

In a bit of a pinch... On Monday, I noticed a loud squeak, like a squeaky pulley coming right from the serpentine belt. Couldn't tell where it was coming from, first thought is that it was the timing belt tensioner/pulley. No issues, drove home with plans to get it checked out. Yesterday, drove home from work and made it about 3 miles, A/C was on, then I heard what sounded like a jolt/rock hitting the wheel well. Thought it was just a rock. 15 seconds later I felt the a/c comp disengage, air became warm, ac was still on, but no cold air. Fortunately it was then that I noticed my temp gauge on H. Immediately pulled over, killed engine. Waited 30 mins to cool, drove to a safe spot. No coolant leaks, just the reservoir was about to overflow. After it cooled it went back down. Hoses were very hot, but with heater on full blast, no heat is coming out. I was able to drive 2-3 miles before it gets to H again. When accelerating hard it's like the Fan clutch slips? When it changes gears the fan makes a weird/interesting noise, almost like a slip...not normal. Additionally, when driving the squeak/chrip is also there. Got it back to work, parked it and got it towed in today. Shop can't determine what it is yet. They replaced TStat, but still overheating, and they were looking at raid thinking it may be clogged or bad. Wouldn't y'all think it's more of a water pump/head gasket issue or fan/clutch issue? Truck has 198K, got timing and water pump done at 100K;however, tensioner and pulley was not done. Help would be appreciated greatly!!!!

P.S. I reached out to BlackWorks and he believes it may be the waterpump. I plan to keep this thread updated so everyone will know what the outcome is. Summer is right around the corner! :flame:

As we talked through private message, my belief is the water pump has either completely seized or the impeller has broken from the shaft. Either way the symptoms make me think the water pump is not spinning/flowing/producing enough pressure/flow. The water pump is driven off the timing belt, the squeaking may be the timing belt slipping on the seized water pump pulley (its not splined/geared like the camshaft or crankshaft gears, which is good because its mainly why Hondas break timing belts when the water pump fails) which will heat the belt up; which is why I also recommended the shop inspect the belt while inspecting the water pump.

Thanks for the quick replys. I hope to have this all sorted out tomorrow, with good news in hand. Until then, I am fortunate enough to be able to drive my company truck (Rather be a Toyota obviously), which happens to be a 2014 Nissan NV3500. Please Google for all of it's glory. Y'all should see the looks I get in it!

Ended up being the WP bearing. Shop I take it too says they have never seen that on a Toyota. I was very fortunate the TBelt didn't snap. For that, I am thankful. The shop says the A/C turned off because the computer determined the engine was overheating, and turned off all non-critical systems. Can anyone second that?

The vehicle will shut off the A/C in the event of certain DTCs and or conditions such as overheating.

I haven't seen a water pump on a 2UZ-FE completely seize up before, typically they just leak a lot. But I have seen many water pumps fail on other engines and completely seize up, in fact its a staple of how many other engines break timing belts (Hondas in particular)

Also I know you voiced concern that he only replaced the water pump and timing belt, I wouldn't be too worried. As long as the water pump wasn't gushing coolant and washing out the bearings I probably wouldn't have replaced them either. Though maybe around 200k when you get your timing belt done again I would consider replacing the bearings and possibly cam and crank seals if they show signs of seepage.
