Another thought. I've been told that a delay going into gear when first started can be due to a leak in the torque converter. Fluid leaks out over time and it has to get pumped back in after starting. May be wrong, but it may help...

And the verdict from Toyota was. . .

The brakes had "stuck" after the vehicle sat for 10 days.

Makes sense, as the loud clunk I noticed was not the transmission, but the pads breaking free from the rotors.

In both cases where I noticed this, the vehicle was parked after going through the car wash and then after driving in the rain. The surface rust had built up after sitting which made the pads to stick to the rotors.

I seen that before pad rusted to rotors . car sat 3 months during the winter had to chisel off the brake pads. IT WAS PARKED OUTSIDE .
