Hard to find Specs, Info & Measurements on 231mm 13WL Tundra Calipers & Rotors

My 231 upgrade is getting started

Napa rotors and calipers, autozone full faced pads (Duralast Cmax lifetime)

ICD, how do you like your CMAX pads? I had a set of them once and hated them. Going down a mountain in my GF's Cherokee they faded like no other. I went back to AutoZone and swapped them for the Duralast Gold (they refunded me the difference) and was happy after that.

Well I only have 250 miles and do have any issues on the pads. They are quite and have no brake dust.

I may take the whole thing apart and see what's up I have a slight wobble when braking. Will also be doing a alignment and tire rotation/rebalance

Did this job yesterday. I now have the 231mm 13WL's and hot damn are the results different. My old 4runner calipers had nowhere near the stopping power of these Tundra brakes. I can lock up my brakes now, whereas before, I could have my foot to the floor and my brakes would shudder. Factory 3rd gen 4Runner brakes are plain scary. I feel so much more comfortable/safer driving my truck now, knowing I am ready for quick-braking situations on the road.

I haven't noticed much difference in everyday braking and can't remember if I've ever slammed on my brakes needing to lock them up.

Looks like I'm going to do some testing tomorrow

Locking my brakes up was the first thing I did upon pulling out of my garage. I wanted to see the real difference in them. I used Wagner ThermoQuiet Ceramic pads and love them. My truck certainly stops well.

Thanks for the thread BFAD. I did the 231 upgrade yesterday using all Napa parts. I did upgrade to the altron brake pads at 82 dollars as they didn't have the taper and were exactly like the OEM pads. If you order from Napa online and reserve the parts you get 10% off when you pick up the parts. It came to 487.00 and when I took the cores back I got my 110 bucks back for a total for the project coming to 377.00. I bled and bedded them and holy crap. This thing stops! I never even experienced the abs even engaging because the brakes were not powerful enough to lock the tires up. This is a lot of brake for this sized truck. I love it.

You've replied about the spacers, thanks for the incite... but I should have asked a couple of more:

I see you're using the std alloy rims (split 3's) which is the setup I have. Are you using the std tire size(265 70 16)? Have you replaced the coils and/or lifted? If the answers to my questions are "no modifications", have you experienced any "rubbing", in light of the fact the wheels are significantly farther "outboard", than before? I'm running stock, but I'm interested in this mod, as I tow a sportboat in the summer-- the extra braking would be nice!

Thanks,

Are those 2 in spacers? Can I see some pictures of the 4runner with the spacers =D Want to see how far out the wheels look like with spacers

Thanks,

I don't think those are the split 3s. They look like split 5s.
POLECLIMBER63 - You ever find out if the tacoma rims will fit?

I havent discovered yet whether the Taco rims will fit over the 231's. I think I've decided not to use the Taco rims I pictured as they are 16x7, whereas the 4runner rims are 16x8. I'll have to wait or go to spacers...

The split 3's I inquired about were pictured in the post I made quoting dhalsey's brake upgrade. On closer inspection of his pics, I see they arent split 3's...

Update for my 231mm setup:

After doing a bit of research for rotors and pads for my wife's 2002 pre-Runner I found some discouraging info about the Auto Zone Duralast ceramic pads. The Duralast pads last so long because they wear out the rotors....

I noticed the scouring on my rotors a week after I installed my Auto Zone parts.

I ended up putting Brembo Rotors and Akebono ceramic pads on my wife's truck. I wanted to get away from the "Organic" OEM pads which wearout quickly and made her front wheels black with brake dust constantly.

Anyways, after a few weeks I was so impressed with this setup on the Tacoma that I replaced the Auto Zone rotors and pads on my Runner with the Brembo Rotors and Akebono ceramic Pads (P/N ASP 976).

I did this yesterday and even without doing a Bed-In they work better than the Auto zone pads. I still have the Auto Zone calipers which are working great.

I thought an update to my 11/21/2012 post is in order...

After 5+ months my Rotors are smooth as glass no scouring like I got from the Auto Zone Duralast ceramic pads. Also very little brake dust from the Akebono pads.

Ditto for me; I had my OEM Tundra brake pads/rotors put on beginning of December.

No problems with them at all. :)

Thanks for the great write up! I sailed through this mod so easily with all that great info! Had to run 1/4 spacers for now but I can stop!

I'm going to be doing this project in the next few weeks. Just curious, how are the remanufactured NAPA calipers holding up? I am debating painting them with caliper paint to prevent any future rust due to the massive amounts of salt used on the roads here.

I've got reman NAPA calipers (I think - LOL) and they're holding up just fine. I'd highly suggest painting them, as you point out, because mine are rusting a bit; but they work great.
