Hardmounted Air Compressor - Which one? and Where?

From what I understand there shouldn't be any oil vapor to begin with unless you have a clogged diff breather an have pushed oil past the o-rings sealing the air lines from gear oil but thanks for the link to those fittings may come in handy!
 
Yeah I would have assumed the same thing at first too.... I'm surprised at just how oily everything has become over time. I guess it just means its time for some de-greaser.
 
i have had water over my mirrors and never had an issue with my locker or compressor. i simply ran a 1/2" id hose from inside the back trim panel(up at the roof line) down to a barbed fitting and used that to replace ARBs filter/intake. it has worked fine and on a scale of 1-10 for engine noise, its a 2-3, i have to have the radio off and sitting still to hear it. i have had it down there for over a year, never once has it had contact with anything or failed to work or miss a beat. as far as over heating goes, well it get all the fresh air it could ever want

not sure if the twin arb compressor is as element friendly as it states pretty clearly not to expose to moisture in my book lol

this is what I'm looking to mount its not really gonna fit in the engine bay..
 
all ARB compressors say that in the paper work.... mine said it too. take a look on youtube at some of the ausies and the hell they put their trucks through, im sure water is getting into their engine bays as well as other places


im running an ARB compressor btw
 
I had a MV50 under the hood of my 4runner, with the hood open, it overheated and stopped working within 4 uses. If you intend to fill more than your own tires, be ready to be there for a long time and let it cool off. I switched to a Puma mounted in the back. Yes its big, but its fast, quiet, and really not that expensive when you consider everything else on the 4runner.

tacojeff - I've seen setups where the tank was separated and bolted to the undercarriage. I think that's what I'll do.

That was my initial plan to use a separate tank, but with the amount of salt they use up here anything underneath would be a rusty mess in a year and an aluminum/stainless tank was ungodly expensive.
 
I agree, mounting an air tank underneath and out of the way is IMO, the best solution. Keeps more space inside the cabin for your other gear, mount the pump somewhere inside out of the elements, and your good to go. Any body running air lockers have any oil coming out of there solenoid breathers? Is it worth extending the breathers out side the vehicle if mounted in the cab? Just trying to get as much perspective on OBA setups as i can before i make a final decision and tackle the install.

I chose to mout my Viair 400C compressor in the same location as slomatt, behind the rear panel on the drivers side.

As far as the noise level goes, I would say that it is between a 7 and 8 with all the doors closed. However, right now I only use my compressor for airing up my tires so I alway have the trunk open when I'm using it so I don't have to worry about the noise.

Just assuming that's an old pic you do have the panel covering it now right? I would imagine that when im using it for airing up I wouldnt be in the vehicle anyway and when i switch it on to run the lockers it's going to charge the system then shut off so it shouldn't be to much of a bother to hear it in the cab.

I'm probably going to go this route If the 4th gen panel allocates enough space in the same fender area.

If not I'll likely build a cargo box and incorporate the compressor inside an enclosure with an access panel, I can probably line the box with some dyno matt or similar insulation to reduce noise and perhaps extend the intake breathers to the outside of the box. Thanks for all the input an perspectives on the install I'm fairly certain I've got the info i need to go ahead with the install. just gotta round up some extra fittings to run the air line outside the vehicle for quick access to airing up tires. and some time to get it all tide up an neat looking.

Yes I do have the panel covering it, that was just a pic to show how I have it mounted.

I would highly recommend this mounting location (or a similar mounting location on a 4th gen) because it will keep the compressor from being damaged or overheated by the engine.

My setup can also be easily modified to include a tank if decide to get a front and/or rear air locker. I would probably just mount the tank in the space where the spare tire goes and hook the air lines for the locker directly into the tank. That way I can still completely turn off the air compressor when I don't need it (i.e. daily driving), but as soon as I need it, I can flip the switch and have the compressor charge the air tank that would be used for operating the air locker(s) and airing up my tires.

Yes - My ARB pump has a nice film of oil on it from the solenoids and years of use. Ive never once used de-greaser - still works great.

hey i just came across this on tractor supply. Campbell Hausfeld Twinstack with Inflation Kit, 2 gal., Prop 65 Compliant. i wonder if the 120volt outlet can handle it? anyone have any troubles using the outlet?
