I was at the Toyota dealership today waiting for oil change, so I decided to check out the new 4Runners. I opened the tailgate and noticed how easy it was to close down. It seems like my tailgate takes a good pull just to close it. The new tailgate is effortless. So, I'm wondering if maybe there is a leak in hydraulic which I didn't see, but the part says it's 'gas filled' or maybe its just old and needs replaced? I can't remember if my tailgate took much effort when I bought it new. I see some bolts that hold it in place so replacement might be a breeze?
Has anyone replaced Tailgate hydraulic lift?

yes, when they start going bad, they wont hold the hatch/hood/truck/whatever open.
Struts are "pneumatic" not "hydraulic". When they go bad they won't hold the tailgate/hood up. They are easy to change, unbolt the worn ones and bolt in the new ones. You will have to get another person or prop rod of some kind to hold up the tailgate or hood while you make the change. My 2003 does have a good deal of resistance when trying to close. It could be that the new 4Runner struts were redesigned to be easier to close.
I changed my hood struts about a year ago. The way I found out they were bad was one day I was refilling my windshield washer container and unexpectedly the hood came crashing down on me. Sometimes the struts fail without warning.
