have any preference for headers???

ive been looking around and thinking about getting some headers for my 22re that will soon be in a trekker. i figure it will be out in the open and i will have to get a new exhaust put in anyways why not? ive read some and looked at some pictures but i wanted to know if anyone has a preference to a certain set. or if they will even be worth it in the end. anyone have experience?

I have headers from LCE Performance and I'm thrilled with them. They look good, fit was excellent and the overall quality is outstanding! I'm sure that any header within that price range will be good (LCE, Rock Ripper). I don't know that I would pay the extra loot for the doug thorley headers though.

As for performance I cannot tell you exactly what they did for my motor. I did a handful of things all at once when I built my motor so I cannot single out the headers alone.
 
ive read your build page and when i rebuilt my motor i did just about everything you did give or take a few things. obviously mine wasnt a turbo at any point but.... so you think this is one of those things where you get what you pay for or is it pretty uniform throughout all the brands?
 
I agree with sV, go LCE.
I believe You most definitely get what you pay for on most things..... unless its an intake tornado, crocs,a salt life sticker OR a snuggie.

Pretty much. Some people swear by the Doug Thorley headers because they're a 4-2-1 header system. Maybe I'm wrong but for the price difference I don't see that much of a benefit. I'm sure it will flow better than a 4-1 header but they're about $300 more than the LCE or Rock Ripper. But I would go with LCE or Rock Ripper, from what I can tell they are the same header with different coatings. LCE uses a ceramic coating while I think the Rock Ripper uses a polished coating of some sort. I have put about 5k miles on my motor so far with some trail rides and junk getting caked on the header. As long as you hose off the engine bay after a dirty drive then the header will stay looking like new for a very long time.
 
I have had two sets of Thorley headers. Both made a huge difference. Granted they were both on chevy 454 tow vehicles not toyotas. The fit and quality were top notch, they have super thick flanges, like 3/8 thick or more so they won't leak or warp. They also came with top quality fasteners. I wouldn't hesitate to pay the extra money for them again on my runner. Just a note, "Headers by Doug" is Doug Thorley's new business. If you buy "Doug Thorley" headers they are now owned by his ex-wife or something like that. I think she may have even sold the company. Just my 2 cents.

Just because it's a 22RE doesn't mean it can't have a bit more performance and still have the reliability.

You can do just about any bolt on mod to these motors and still have a very reliable engine. There are a few simple bolt-ons that will make a huge change in power. The EFI power package is a great start! I have almost everything in that package except the big bore TB. I still find myself wanting more power though. I may end up selling my 22RE and putting in a 7MGTE or 2JZ. Gotta love the boosted inline 6's!

This was my point - not that modding the 22re makes it unreliable, but that you can throw $3000 at it easy and still want more power.

The 22RE's strength is that it's bulletproof, but it will never be cost effective to make a high performance engine out of it.

I understand your point and I wish I had realized this a year ago. I have almost $3,000 in my motor and I could have done a motor swap for less and had a much more powerful engine. But at that time I thought that the 22re would be plenty. I think the issue is that once you start making more power you will always want more. My target is about 300hp and I don't think that the 22re can produce that and still be reliable. Who knows, maybe I'll put a 7mgte in my runner and still want more... next thing you know I'm shearing bell housings in half like GonOvr. There's a compromise somewhere. But I will say that I am more than pleased with my motor, I just want more.
 
i love the 22re i have and i will drive it till it blows then if that ever happens i will probably do a strait 6 diesel swap and run bio diesel. that would be pretty cost effective. small businesses around here will pay you to take their used oils and such. i wish i could find a toyota 4 banger diesel somewhere around here and build that up over the next few years and have a new engine ready to stick in. but right now my 22re is perfect for what i need.

I work in a restaurant and we have problems with people stealing our used oil here in Portland. Kinda weird but essentially cheap fuel for them.

Anyways back on topic, the 22re is an awesome engine but it will always lack in power but that is not a horrible thing when off road.
 
Wow, a Problem with stealing used oil?? Isn't that like stealing your Garbage?? I thought most places pay to have it taken away. I haven't worked at a food joint for many years though. But I do think veggie oil is better than bio-deisel....at least a lot cheaper, eh?
 
We have a separate company that deals with our used oil and we get these fliers from them on occasion saying to watch for these vehicles stealing oil etc.
