Head Gasket symptoms starting to show...

DSC01468.jpg
~original[/IMG]

Confirmed.

man, that t-splitter doesn't look familiar with the lines i have out as options. I noticed a few minor differences when i looked under my friend's 2000 hood as mine is 97.

I'll look again right now and snap a few shots of what i got.

Thanks!!!

There u go. Luckily I took several pics of my job progress. Both fittings are connected to a "T" or "Y" plastic connector and the hose that comes from the third fitting, gets connected to the IAC valve and that's it.

Hope that helps. :thumb3:

Let me know if you're missing some of the hoses or can't find the Y/T shaped one. I have some spare that I pulled off my engine that I'm replacing. Yours for cost of shipping assuming they're exactly same as what you need.

Thanks agloukhoff ! but i think i might have figured out the puzzle, with a few exceptions that i'm still stumped on.

I soft bolted everything on to visually see the placement of the inlets and outlets to guess where the hoses go. It helped greatly, but i had a few places where i couldn't figure out. I acutally DO have that T hose and Charlie's pic helped me prove that. However, that leaves a few vacuum plugs i need to figure out. See pics below.

Cmon, it's like a puzzle or a game. :zoom:

Okay, so here's what i got:

Acronyms...
Upper Intake Manifold (UIM)
Lower Intake Manifold (LIM)
Throttle Body (TB)
Fuel Rail (FR)
Brake Booster (BB)
Power Steering (PS)

The hoses i have...
M ---> PCV to UIM6
L --->
K ---> LIM1, LIM2, to TB1

Connecting the lines...

LIM1 ---> T-Hose
LIM2 ---> T-Hose

UIM1 ---> Mini T-Hose (i don't know where it connects afterwards. See pics below)
UIM2 --->
UIM3 ---> A line coming from BB area
UIM4 ---> A mini hose coming from TB
UIM5 ---> A hose coming from PS
UIM6 ---> A hose that connects to PCV (see pic below)

TB1 ---> T-Hose
TB2 --->
TB3 --->

Coolant Line(?) from firewall --->

And to sum it up, i don't know where the following goes......
-The "L" hose.
-The mini hose connecting to UIM1, where the other end connects to.
-UIM2
-TB2
-TB3
-A coolant line coming from the firewall

Let me know if ya'll can't see the pics. Photobucket is lagging so i quickly made a Flickr which i;m not to fond of the HTML code used.

Throttle Body, as you can see i'm not sure what plugs into TB2 and TB3... My guess is that it was once connected to the Intake. And the boxes that i took off during the intake mod. Anyone care to trace this on their car and tell me where it goes?

The middle piece of the intake manifold. This one was pretty straight forward. No need help here but just wanted to get the picture out there.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/87434714@N08/8000574317/" title="photo(7) by tamw528, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8032/8000574317_080e7eaf6f.jpg" width="374" height="500" alt="photo(7)"></a>

The three hoses i have sitting. Charlie had a picture of the T-Hose (K) being connected to the lower intake manifold. I thought otherwise but mine was pure guessing. I originally thought (L) was suppose to go to UIM2 and connect down to LIM2. Where does this hose go??

This is the coolant line(?) that comes from the firewall on the passenger side and hooks to the driver side. I have no idea where this connects... Anyone know????

This is the mini line coming from UIM1. It's a mini T hose that goes somewhere....

Just took pictures from my Runner's engine (21) :wow2:. Several of them. Check em out. If you still need extra pics, let me know. From your pics, I can just tell that the hose on the 7th pic "This is the coolant line(?) that comes from the firewall on the passenger side and hooks to the driver side. I have no idea where this connects... Anyone know????" Is located in the wrong way. That one goes just beneath the IAC valve and connects to TB3 shown on pic 1. The hose from the last pic "This is the mini line coming from UIM1. It's a mini T hose that goes somewhere...." is actually non existing in my engine. There is just a small hose, no "T". Took some pics of that detail as well.

Man, that's a lot of pics. thanks! lol

That UIM2 seems like it goes with my "L" hose. But i'll have to check if there's a inlet that it fits onto. I didn't see any initially, that's why i'm confused. I'll check later today.

Best pic to describe it here.

Maybe it's somewhere back here??? I know that there's a return fuel line or something that connects there. Crap, come to think about it, I'm really guessing that it connects to an L shaped inlet to the driver side head or valve cover. If it is, i don't think i saw it or even if the machine shop put it back for me after resurfacing. Crap. I'll need to double check this....:dammit:

As for TB2, where is the hose leading to? Thanks for clearing up the "coolant hose" that was wrapped the wrong direction. I think i did that when i wanted to make room. So if it is a coolant line, that means the other end of it, TB2 would also be a coolant line.. yeah?

So for the T hose, does it go to TB1 or TB2? From you pictures, it looks like it goes to TB2 and the hose going into TB1 is from somewhere else. Hmm, i'll double check this too.

You have 3 hoses connected to the IAC Valve. 2 facing each other and having each hose clamps; those get connected to the upper ports of that valve (coolant inlet and outlet hoses). The remaining one that goes on the bottom or lower position, is the vacuum one, no clamp on that one.

This is how the hose coming from the T in one of your pics, connects to the IAC. So artistic :artist2: :D

Ahh.. i see. Okay. I'm going to stop by the garage and take a peek and also work to tighten that lower crank. Need to rent a 200+ torque wrench from oreilly as well.

I'll check this while i'm there as well.

Thanks!!

Alright, i was able to make some progress on this last night. A milestone to overcome was tighten that lower crank bolt to 217 ft lbs of torque. After week(s) of trying to figure out the best method, i found a tool that i thought might've helped me. Cost $30 at Napa auto parts and it universal. Went to 4 different hardware store to finally find the right length bolts and grade. 1.25 pitch thread, 8MM diameter, and at least 70MM in length. Not only that but it had to be strong. Boy was it hard to find a Grade 8 bolt in this size. Instead, i found a Class 10.9, which some say is comparable to Grade 8. It's a heat treated bolt so it's close enough. I feel like a bolt expert after this hunt.

So i said i was able to get the bolt tighten to torque spec. But i also bent the crap out of the bolts with that holding tool. Check it out below.

After the crank, i was able to bolt on all the other pulleys, P/S, A/C, alternator, fan, etc. Put the top cover on and i felt good for the night. What i got planned for tonight is to work on the manifold and vacuum lines.

Thanks, Charlie and others for helping me with figuring out the vacuum lines. I think i got it!

Update to this list...

Acronyms...
Upper Intake Manifold (UIM)
Lower Intake Manifold (LIM)
Throttle Body (TB)
Fuel Rail (FR)
Brake Booster (BB)
Power Steering (PS)

The hoses i have...
M ---> PCV to UIM6
L ---> UIM2 to a plug on the valve cover
K ---> LIM1, LIM2, to TB1

Connecting the lines...

LIM1 ---> T-Hose
LIM2 ---> T-Hose

UIM1 ---> Mini T-Hose (i don't know where it connects afterwards. See pics below)
UIM2 ---> L-hose that goes to valve cover
UIM3 ---> A line coming from BB area
UIM4 ---> A mini hose coming from TB
UIM5 ---> A hose coming from PS
UIM6 ---> A hose that connects to PCV (see pic below)

TB1 ---> Hose that comes from LIM
TB2 ---> T-Hose (K) that connects to LIM1 and 2
TB3 ---> The coolant line that I didn't know went where.

Coolant Line(?) from firewall ---> TB3

And to sum it up, i don't know where the following goes......
-The mini hose connecting to UIM1, where the other end connects to. I'll figure this one out somehow

With the bolts on, this is the result of 217 ft lbs of torque and a pulley holding tool.

That L hose connects to this and UIM2. It was turned downward so i didn't initially see it. It's also very loose but i think it's fine since it's for air. No seal needed, yeah?

In case anyone uses this thread or these recent posts about vacuum lines, i wanted to post a correction to an earlier picture.

The K hose end should go to TB2, not TB1.

Quick update that i was able to put some work in on the 4runner last night. Got the manifold put back together and routed the lines that i had listed out. I found out where that mini t hose routed to, it connects to a small hose that connects to something on the driverside strut tower (see pic below). Also, changed out my heater control valve since the plug on mine cracked while getting too close to it. Was an easy change, cost me $30 for the part.

What's left is to get some new nuts and bolts for where the Y pipe connects to the exhaust. I lost some nuts and bolts so going to the hardware store later today to get some new ones. Also need the drive belts (P/S, A/C, Alt) and going to hunt for some 3/8 inner diameter hose for the new tranny cooler. Double check i got everything connected, even on the under carriage (i remember messing around down there in the early stages trying to get the engine harness completely out the way), make sure i got the fluid, engine is grounded, and give it a start. Maybe tonight!

How far i got last night.

Alright, so i got the motor running but encountered some issues.

1. When i first started up the motor on Saturday afternoon, i let it warm up and checked for leaks. I immediately noticed some oil coming from the front crank and realize that i had not replaced the front oil seal. Mistake on my end but ended up going back at it and replaced it. Pretty much took a water pump timing job just to get to the front main seal. Took about 4 hours in total.

Started it back up this afternoon and only noticed a little bit of oil. Got worried a bit. Cleaned it with break cleaner, let it run a little longer, and it went away. I think the front main seal had to heat up and it probably expanded then sat it place. Looks good now.

2. My thermostat is not opening up. Initially, i let the motor sit for a bout 30 minutes running to let the valves and stuff settle in and lube up. I then looked around and felt the bottom radiator hose out of curiosity and it was cold. The coolant is going through the top passage, meanwhile the bottom hose is cold. Even letting it sit for 30 minutes +, it still didn't open. I think there's a big air pocket inside. I already went through a few containers of coolant so i'm trying to find a way to fill up the motor without draining.

Others have ran it without thermostat then with but i figure that would create the same result since the coolant would just flow out as soon as i try to install the thermo. Instead, thinking about turning the top hose that goes into the motor upward so that i can use it as a funnel and pour coolant in from there. Also unplugging the heater hose to let the air escape. Fill it until it gets pretty full... what do you think?

Other notable issues..

- High idle (1.5) while in park and neutral but drops to 800 RPM when in gear. Could be the coolant issue and that the ECU is thinking it's not "warmed up" yet therefore it stays at warmup idle.
- Low oil on dipstick (below low mark) even though i put 5 QT in. I added about .5 quart in and saw the oil went up to the low mark on the dipstick.
- Throwing code P0450, evap sensor?

Found a thread for another method to bleeding the coolant. Before this, i always assumed that running the motor with the radiator cap off would sufficiently bleed the system. Now looking into it, there are other solutions if air is still trapped. Going to actually try this one tonight.

I tried to do the method today but found that once i pulled the hose out from the radiator, there was already coolant in the manifold. I know because i unplugged the heater hose side that connects to the heater control valve i installed, then i squeezed the radiator side and coolant shot out. I was hoping to be able to pour coolant into that hose thinking that would solve the problem as gravity would carry the coolant down.

I'm give a try and take out the thermostat to see if the water from that upper hose drains down and out the thermo hole. If it does, than i think i simply have a big air pocket. If it doesn't, i THINK i'm blocking a passage, meaning the head gasket was put in wrong. Do you think this is a correct assumption?

Well, there are always minor (major!) details, like the ones you already mentioned regarding putting the head gasket in the wrong position. I hope that's not the case and I guess is not possible (just thinking positively). If I am not wrong, gaskets come identified, left and right. In my case I checked, re-checked, and re-checked those positions and that no holes were being blocked during installation. Also compared new gaskets against the old ones to be sure the new ones didn't came with defects... sh$%t happens.

Being that said, there is a small hole in the thermostat. That hole should be placed in the upper position. The purpose is to let air bubbles trapped in the lower portion of the engine, to go up. Also be sure the thermostat was installed in the proper flow direction. I think it can be placed in both ways and if that's true, one can end up installing it backwards and that will cause a scenario similar to the one you have.

In my case, I just filled up my radiator, turned on the engine, some bubbles came up, level went down, added more red stuff, placed the cap and that was it. Never have had issues with blocked flow or air trapped inside the engine coolant passages.

Hope that helps :)
