head gasket turned into engnbldr rebuild

Driftinfc's build: lift, engbldr rebuild, etc...

I had the pleasure of blowing my head gasket on saturday and I figured I would share my quick and easy gasket job with you guys. Well boy was I wrong. So this quick and easy head gasket thread has turned into a rebuild with an engnbldr built head and 268 cam.

So far I have gotten the head off and discovered an uncomfortable amount of play with the pistons. The block and pistons themselves seem to be in pretty good condition so I will only be needing rings and a solid cleaning to the block. I promptly ordered a rebuild kit along with a new head/cam. If I didnt have work this would be done soon but being that I have wierd days off this will be a couple weeks.

rebuilding the engine sounds like a fun job in it self. I am starting to wonder what I can do to mine or if they sell hopped up engines I can just drop in.

I priced that out lol. Best case scenario for a nicely built drop in was 1700. I will be at about 800 when all said and done

I like engnbldr, had a great experience when I had to do my own gasket and I've heard nothing but good things about his heads.

86noob, there's not much out there in the way of built 3.0 crate motors or long blocks. There's more options for the 22RE, but I don't think either are worth the money. If you're going to take either of those motors too far away from stock, might as well look into a complete swap.

KidV hit the nail on the head! There is only so much you can do to the 22re with a reasonable budget and your gains will be minimal. I had a 22re with nearly 3k into it and still had no more than 150hp. It's just simply not worth the money. If I had to do it again, I would have left the engine stock or do an engine swap.

That was my dilemma, 7mgte or a fresh 22re. I decided based simply off of time needed. The 7m would prob take me weeks to months to source everything out and install it, this motor will be done next week and that is only because the parts are taking so long to get here lol.

Got a couple hrs free tonight and decided to pull the motor out and get it on the stand. The plan is to drop the block off thursday to get cleaned, powder coated and flexHoned.

I DO NOT recommend using the head studs as lifting points if you plan on reusing the bolts, i know thats common sense but just throwing that out there.

Finally have an update!

So I got the motor stripped down and brought it over to D&F Performance to get decked And dipped. The guys there are ridiculously knowledgable when it comes to engines, and they won't hesitate to answer stupid questions.

The block is currently in the trunk of my Taurus waiting to be assembled tonight after work. I will post pics as soon as I get home.

Pictures are blurry because I smashed my thumb and my hand was shaking, sorry about that.

Almost ready to throw the engine back in. Only thing holding me up is this 1 mother effing bolt on the lower manifold. Should have pics of it in the truck tomorrow, then I pray nothing leaks and it starts lol.

lol it actually wasn't that bad.the only problem I have run into so far was that I mixed up the connecting rod caps and had to take them to the machine shop to get sorted out.other than that little hick up most things have gone smoothly, now let's see how well the install goes lol.

Well the motor is finally ready to go in, and I decided to snag a skyjacker 4inch suspension lift. I realize now that I have an addiction to modding vehicles, at first I was in denial but now I have accepted it. Next up is gonna be some 35s and 5.29 gears.

Welcome to the club. We meet on Thursdays in the basement of the church. :)

Nice. Are you gonna wheel it? If so, regearing is a great time to stick a locker in the rear.
