Head Gasket

I may need to replace the Head Gasket on my 2005 v6. I'll drop the vehicle to mechanic mid-week for diagnostics.
In a meantime I just went and check what is on the market for Head Gaskets.

- Toyota sells them for $94 each or overhaul kit for $318
- Fel-Pro has improved design Gasket for $38 or Kit for $175
- Apex sells Gaskets for $39 each or Kit for $
- ITM Engine Components has $49 for Gasket or $146 for
- Mahl Original/Victor Reinz is the most expensive for $61 per Gasket or $195 for Kit.

I'm not much aware of those brands. Could anyone share his/her opinion on them and recommend which one is better then the others?

For parts like head gaskets, I think Oem is the only way to go. Toyota performed many hours testing their engine and refining details, including the gaskets and torque specs, which are designed around specific gaskets. Aftermarket companies don't perform anywhere near the same amount of testing. And with something like a head gasket, you definitely don't want to do it twice. Also, make sure you have the head milled or at least checked for straightness. Same with the block, make sure it's verified writhing spec before the mechanic slaps it all back together.

Head gasket question

I have a 1997 4runner.........3.4L, 4WD

To replace the head gaskets and water pump, will the alternator and or the bracket used to attach it to the block have to removed?
