Head Gasket :(

i have a head gasket problem and i was curious as to which way i should go about fixing it, i have a 94' 2wd.
please help
and i was woundering if it was cheaper/easier to do it myself or have the dealership do it?:vader:

Welcome to the forum! Its nice to see a female on here once and a while.

What engine do you have? The 22re is a litttle easier to change the headgasket on than the 3vze but both are doable. My first 3zve headgasket took me about 15 hours to complete.

If it is the 3zve and never been changed by the dealer before it is under a recall. Have the dealer check the vin number to see if the vehicle has ever had the gasket changed and if not it is still under warrantee no matter how many miles on it. Actually you can check it yourself if you open an account with Toyota. Go here Toyota Owners - Official Toyota Owners Website sign up and put your vehicle into the system and it will tell you if any dealer has ever done the recall as well as everything else any dealer has done including what dealer sold the vehicle originally.

To do it yourself, I hope you consider yourself something of a mechanic.

My 3.0L V6:

It's 11 hours labor you'll be charged.
My head gasket (full set) was $207 at Schuck's (O'Reilly's)
The head stretch bolts were $60
Machine Shop charge for resurfacing heads was $178
New manifold bolts were like $10

Whole deal ended up costing me $950
(I saved about $500 over-all on both parts and labor)

Let me know if you do better (just curious)

And i have the 3.0 liter 3vze.
and i dont think id be able to do that by myself lol dont know that much about motors yet.

And i have had the Toyota Dealership here check it out and they said it would be around $600-700 to fix it around $350 per head gasket.

i've heard alot of good things about the blue devil HG repair.. 60 dollars and most people say it held for about 10000 miles before the leak came back.. normally i'd say bite the bullet and just repair it properly. but the 3vze is just overall a beast with alot of issues.. i spent well over 2k in performance heads, with new HG's and rebuilt the motor and litterally new EVERYTHING from radiator all the way back to the flywheel... and i must say i wish i had have jus dropped in a 3.4 used motor from ebay.. the 3vze is still givin me crap after all that time and money. i calculated it out and the fuel savings alone going from the 3.0 to the 3.4 would have paid for the engine in 3 years.. not to mention waaay more power and reliability. if you have questions on how to do a HG chage by yourself tho feel free to ask, i've done several on my friends rigs as well.

You're not including MACHINE SHOP in that price. Add almost $200.

And how the hell can the Toyota Stealership match my cost? doesn't sound right to me ...

Jeeze, how much could i get the 3.4 for on ebay?
i know i get pretty crappy gas milage cuz of this little issue, i know that they dont normaly get amazing gas milage considering lol but i get terrible gas milage right now, and if u say it saves all the way around to just do the swap then i mite just do that. :frog:

Not necessarily....they're a bunch of ass clowns. They just want your money, hence the nickname Stealership.
