Headlight Mod?

Hello.

I've seen some posts mentioning a 99+ headlight mod.

After trying basic and advanced search I've come to the conclusion I'm incapable of finding anything specific.

Since the headlight aiming screws on my 98 are rusted up I need to replace both whole assemblies.

If there's a better light that fits I'd love to know more.

Most folks will tell you to buy OEM 99+ Headlights, because the light output is supposedly better. I bought some from E-bay for $130.00 shipped to Canada, and love them. I guess it all depends on what you want, I find the output is good, and with my auxiliary driving lights, I light up the entire road and it's surroundings pretty well!
 
yes, basically what toyota did, is they changed the lens... instead of having all of those cuts or "fluting"(those lines in the casting, that go up and down and side ways and angles ect -they help channel or disperse the light to where it needs to go ) in the lens that the 96-99s had, in 00-on they gave the trucks a perfectly clear lens and made the reflector have all the cuts or fluting in it, and it works better, the fluting in the lens "soaked up" some of the light output and you would lose some light.

personaly i think sylvania bulbs are junk, over priced and not good quality at all. i have had them burn out in less than a year and just never been impressed with the light out put by them. i think both IPF and http://www.piaa.com/ are 10x better and out perform the sylvanias in every way, and considering they cost the same and have been used by race teams and proven time and time again in the most extreme/harsh conditions, for me the choice is clear (no pun intended)

Sylvania makes good light bulbs. You should never pay full retail for them. You can find them plenty of places online for pretty cheap. The SilverStar Ultras are nice.

they will not withstand the vibrations from off roading or even gravel roads very long. sure they make a great light for a car or mall crawler but if you ever drive back roads, logging roads or heaven forbid actually take your runner 4wheeling then you will soon break the filaments in them. like most things out there, you get what you pay for. -i wouldnt ever pay full price for PIAAs or IPFs either

I got the 99+ headlights from Certifit Online for $38 each - they work excellent, no problems thus far and couldn't see paying more than that. If you need more light output I would just go with some hella's or other trail lights.

Come on man. You can't be serious. Plenty of people run the Ultras who offroad. I don't know where your coming up with this stuff, but it's not accurate.
 
hey if they work great for you then thats cool, ive had nothing but bad luck with them and their customer support as been terrible. -its probably just coincidence that professional race team and hard core enthusiasts use almost exclusively and PIAA, IPF, KC or Hella bulbs, and or lights from auto cross to 24hr Lemans to SCORE, to Paris - Dakar...

again if they are working for you then thats great, i personally and have had friends who have had nothing but issues with them burning out, breaking or just plan failing well under the expected life span, and never once has sylvania backed their product. even after 3 weeks with a receipt, they told me that i was either installation error or vehicle malfunction.

two different H3 bulbs by sylvania from different lights in different trucks out of different packages and both did this in less than 2 months, and again they are not head lights, these where in fog lights i had, still have and use.

To each his own. Mine are still good after two years of use. It really doesn't make sense to compare racing lights to consumer lights. Two totally different uses and standards.

At any rate people should buy what they feel is best for them. All we can do is tell of the experiences we've had with them.
 
Back on topic....

Thank-you for the year/component clarification.

I'll find my own way with respect to bulbs. It seems that topic has some good and bad opinions and I'm not into commenting on either.
