Headlights wont turn on.

So my headlights quit on me this week and wont turn on to i have been distonnecting my wiring harness to find that the harness is damaged and there are 2 wires that have pulled out of their connectors. but when i used a test light to chech the h4 light socket i noticed there is no power going to my low beam circuit but there is power going to my high beam circuit. however when i wire my hid ballast directly to the high beam connector it works for a few seconds then pops the 10a Fuse. the low beam circuit will not ignite the ballast whatsoever.

Any ideas guys? Addison? im thinking could my light stalk have gone bad? but i dont really want to throw money at it nd not fix a problem.

OK, first question. Do you have DRL or not? And second question, clarify this part, is the low beam and high beam circuits NOT working properly?

Hey Jaime! the low beam crcuit is not getting power. my 99 does not have DRL the high beam does get power since my test light lights up when i ground that circuit out. but the low does not light the test light up with the stalk on.

OK, cool, we need to look at the Dimmer Relay first, I'm working at the moment, give me an hour and I'll examine it. Easy Peasy:couch2:

yeah id look at the headlight relay itself... mine just went out on me. and i swapped relays with a spare i had sitting around and boom problem solved...

Ooops, I don't have the pre 2000 EWD without DRL. I'll have to call in my backup TheDurk to see if it's any different. On the later non DRL circuit, there is no dimmer relay, it's all handled by the switch. So do you have Red with blue/black, red with yellow and blue with black for the 3 wires at the headlight connector? If so it should be the same. On the late system the low beam circuit is run through the instrument cluster, for auto shut off. Does yours have that?

:popcorn:

I'll just get the popcorn on this one. I'm confused, because a '99 w/o DRL's (as all non-Canadian '99s are) should have power on the COMMON terminal to the headlights, and the highs and lows are switched grounds. Left and right are fused separately.

I will suggest that NAPA has very nice H4 headlight pigtails. Nicer than OEM Toyotas. I'll edit in p/n shortly.

Yes, that is why I was asking him about colors, I think he has a ground circuit problem, but I don't know how his HID conversion is set up. He is here in my neck of the woods, I may have to have him over for a beer, or 7, and solve this in the driveway.

Good idea.

my co worker has a 96 4runner so we'll try swapping relays to see

i beleve those are the same colors my wires are but inned to check again.

yes the high s and lows use the switched grounf on the headlight plug. the problem is when i turn on the stalk to the on position for the headlights the low beams dont trigger the test light, but instead the high beams do.

that sounds like the stalk/switch is bad... have you tried the "flash to pass" on the stalk/switch do the lights work then?

'99 and '02 non-DRL headlight EWD's (labelled "USA" in '99) are identical in all respects, including colors--other than the aforementioned title.

OK, we need to be very clear, no you need to go far out of your way to say exactly what you mean.

When the headlights are on, and in the "low beam" position, the HIGH BEAM wire is triggering the test light? And how are you testing this, are you putting one end of the test light on the POSITIVE side of the battery?

Sorry to sound rude, but so far this thread is on page 2 and really I don't even know what it is that is not working! Really! I loathe swapping parts randomly, this is a very simple system, I've diagnosed them for 30+ years, and I don't guess. OK, I'm off my soapbox.

Tell me if with the headlights ON, and in LOW beam position if you have GROUND at Blue with black stripe wire, and 12V at the Red with black on the right, Red with Blue on the left. This will get us moving in a proper direction.

Hey Jaime sorry for all the confusion guys. So I have the test light grounded to the negative battery terminal the high beam wire is the red with blue stripe on the driver side the red with green is low beam wire. When the light stalk is in the low beam on there is no power running to the red with green, but the red with blue high beam wire there is power. With the stalk in the off position. There is no power at either low or high beam wires. If I pull back on the stalk at this time there is power running to the high beam and the test light comes on and off as I flick the switch for the high beams.

Just to confirm my paper '99 EWD shows the following:

Driver Side(LH):

Common (12V+): Red w/Blue stripe
High Beam (-):Red w/yellow stripe
Low Beam(-):Blue w/black stripe

Passenger Side(RH):

Common (12V+): Red w/Black stripe
High Beam (-):Red w/yellow stripe
Low Beam(-):Blue w/black stripe

This may come in useful. Ignore the colors, it's the plug set-up/wire position being illustrated:
socket_wiring_diagram.jpg

What does make sense is the Red/Blue is the COMMON, and carries 12v+ with highs or lows, so the test lamp should come on with both high and low. The same applies to the Red/Black on the other side. It looks to me your taps are set up to get 12V+ whenever headlights are on. The other wires are the high and low, and the test light should never come on when the other end is on battery negative as those wires are switched grounds. Please check what you think are the wire assignments against the plug pin-out above.

I don't know why the other colors don't match. They do on my '99. We are talking about a '99, right?

I hope I'm not interfering, I just want to get folks on the same page. Back to my couch and popcorn.

I think you are not understanding the system. When you turn on the headlights, the wires you are describing as HI beams are just the power for BOTH hi and lo. That means your relay is good. The other two wires on each connector are hi and low GROUNDS. Please do as TheDurk described and tell us what you are getting at all 3 wires in low AND high.
