In my 04, the AC comes on to help keep the windows from fogging. I can shut off AC and still be in auto mode, but AC won't kick back in automatically. If I adjust ANYTHING other than AC while in auto-mode, the auto mode switches to manual mode. So I'd say what you are experiencing is probably normal.

Don't know if it helps out <<<<, but it helps me out. Thanks for the info! Also, I think Toyota made the AC come on (or actually in standbay, I believe, as the compressor seems to only kick in when needed) while in auto mode for defogging ability, even in colder weather. Living in Alaska, I engaged the AC quite often to clear windows when my 93 4runner was filled with damp passangers after skiing, etc.--an old trick I learned long ago after may clothing soaked fishing trips.

In my 2003, I find that when I have it in auto, it sometimes turns the defogger on. A couple of times I glanced down and the defogger was on when in auto mode. This happens when it is around 10-20 degrees. It is usually accurate too!! I agree with you though. Turning on the AC compressor clears the windows quickly. I just don't like the fact that it is always on when you hit Auto.

Funny that no one is complaining that the A/C compressor kicks in when you have it in defrost mode.
Remember that the A/C compressor dries the air inside the vehicle. Dry air helps to keep the windows clear and it makes it easier to heat or cool the vehicle -- it's more work to add or remove heat from moist air so the system dries it first. Same principle as your A/C at home.
By the way, every vehicle we have had that has had an auto setting has turned the A/C compressor on when "auto" is used.

Ya the A/C being on all the time was bugging me too, so I just quit using the 'Auto' feature.
My other problem with the heater, and was wondering if it happens to anyone else. I noticed now that it's been getting colder, when I'm driving around. I can have the temp set to 65, and the hot air coming out of the vents about puts me too sleep. If I go to Lo, the 'recirc' light will come on, and cold air will come out the vents.
It doesn't always do this, other times I can be driving, and I have to adjust the temp up to 70 or so, to be confortable.
Any ideas, to why sometimes 65 can be hot, and other times too cold? Shouldn't 65 be 65?
Not sure if there is anything I can be doing wrong?

This is true of all A/C compressors on every car. With temperatures that low, the cycle will not function, so the A/C compressor will not operate. Try it out for yourself.

Wow! I am feeling almost normal. I was thinkin it was me being an older girl and all that! I even read the owners manual a few times trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. I finally thought I had the situation under my control and bam today the a/c came on. It was only 48 degrees and cloudy here in Baltimore and the temperature was set at 72 on auto with the def/foot sec selected and fan speed at postion 1 above low. I had comfortable air the it went cold. What I am doing wrong?
