<<<< said:While there is only -3 outside mine heater in Auto mode also engages A/C on. Why? Is it normal? I have to manualy turn it off, but then I'm not in Auto mode.... WTH?
Mark86 said:The AC light will go on whenever you hit the Auto button. I don't know why Toyota made it like that. I always push the AC button and it goes off. The system is still in Auto mode and the Auto button should be lit up. If you change the fan speed or direction of the airflow, then the auto light goes out. If you only change the fan speed, then the direction of airflow is still in auto but the auto button is not lit up. Also, I think Toyota made the AC come on (or actually in standbay, I believe, as the compressor seems to only kick in when needed) while in auto mode for defogging ability, even in colder weather. Living in Alaska, I engaged the AC quite often to clear windows when my 93 4runner was filled with damp passangers after skiing, etc.--an old trick I learned long ago after may clothing soaked fishing trips.
As far as I know, the A/C compressor comes on at all temps in "auto" mode.aamills said:so when using 'auto' and it is 10 degrees outside will the AC compressor kick on to defrost the windows or is it just a default setting that the AC light turns on during the auto setting?

The A/C compressor comes on. The easy way to test is to open the hood, turn the system on auto, and go look at the compressor.BlueGP said:But does the A/C common on when you are in auto using heat or is it just in standby mode waiting for the time that it is needed.
IF it makes any difference, I don't recall seeing that mentioned in the owner's manual of any other vehicle we had with an auto mode.<<<< said:I figure the hell with the A/C light I just let mine run, it's good for A/C system. But what gets me is that manual say nothing about A/C been on in Auto mode when temp's cold...
I haven't noticed that -- but I keep the temperature between 68 and 72 most of the time. If I'm wanting heat, then I turn the selector to the floor vents only so I don't have the warm air hitting me in the eyes.cdoyle said:Ya the A/C being on all the time was bugging me too, so I just quit using the 'Auto' feature.
My other problem with the heater, and was wondering if it happens to anyone else. I noticed now that it's been getting colder, when I'm driving around. I can have the temp set to 65, and the hot air coming out of the vents about puts me too sleep. If I go to Lo, the 'recirc' light will come on, and cold air will come out the vents.
It doesn't always do this, other times I can be driving, and I have to adjust the temp up to 70 or so, to be confortable.
Any ideas, to why sometimes 65 can be hot, and other times too cold? Shouldn't 65 be 65?
Not sure if there is anything I can be doing wrong?

TechWrench said:Actually, is isn't to defrost the windows, it is to de-humidify the interior so the interior window surfaces will be less likely to fog over.

Sac State said:Yes, I almost always keep my thermostat set at 70*.
This morning the heat coming out of the vents was so hot, I had to turn the HVAC off.
The dealer will never be able to fix this as it is too intermittant.
