Hi! This forum has been great to check out r/e my '98 4Runner. Sorry I only just joined, am not v. car-handy and haven't had too many problems w/ it (until now). Even now if I can figure out what's going on w/ it and have that fixed would like to have it for a while longer, it's got way more style than anything new I could buy!
The guy who owned it before me really must have loved it, it has a boost gauge (and I think at some point had something additional in the engine in relation to that), custom spoiler, custom tail lights, chrome grill/wheels, and had an extra jaos chrome rear bumper (but that eventually came off).
It's a great car! Was even stolen in California once and brought on a high speed chase in downtown San Francisco (the thief had good taste!) but was caught and returned a few minutes later! But that is sadly how I lost the front passenger side fender flare, darn.
Anyway, HI! And thank you for all of the awesome info. on here! Will be posting a question r/e running rough/cylinder 5 misfire/fixed coils so if you know about the '98 Limited 4wd ones, would love your help, as I'm in the midst of a divorce and don't have much time or money to get it running awesomely again. Does the engine look like this:

Or do you see either of these on top of it?

If you see either of the latter images on your engine you have a supercharger which would explain the boost gauge. Depending on if you have it could change whats wrong.

LOL, mine. He's a "car guy" not a "truck/SUV" guy. I bought it 8+ years ago and worked hard to pay it off!

Hi and welcome, I am also from Wilmington. Do you remember when you last changed the spark plugs and wires?

I'll double check in the morning, too dark right now to tell. It has some TRD stuff, but def. doesn't have the supercharger anymore. I think he took it out when he sold it (the previous owner). But I can post a pic of the engine tomorrow. Thanks for your reply!!

They were replaced by the Toyota dealership here two yrs. ago. And he did just replace the coil and plugs but not the wires. The dealership assessment was that coil 5 was bad and had corrupted the plugs and wires (which they said were "arcing"). So he replaced the plugs and coil, but when he went to get the wires after the others didn't fix it, the guy at the parts store put them back and said that wouldn't help if the others hadn't solved it. He's the one who suggested the gunked up fuel injector.

Welcome from SC. I know it'd be a long haul from Wilmington and you may not be into off-roading, but we are planning a meet and run for T4R.org members at Gulches ORV park in Laurens, SC on the 26th. Won't be something you'd want to do until you get the truck squared away, but I'm extending the invite to all Carolina 4Runners and surrounding area. Here's a link to the meet thread.

As far as your issue goes... I don't know how much help I can offer. The things you've done so far and the steps you're currently investigating, seem to be in line with proper trouble shooting steps. Plugs, coils, wires, fuel system (ie. injectors, fuel quality, etc.). If it's something you can't track down on your own, it might be worth having a mechanic chase down for you. Don't know if that helps, but good luck and welcome to the forum!

It was the Fuel Injector

Thanks for all the help!! After the wire was also replaced (so plugs, coil and wires) they figured out it was the fuel injector. Had that replaced and it's running like the beauty it is again!!
