Help! 2003 T4R Limited - Low volume level from rear speakers

Hello all, I'm a proud owner of a new to me 2003 4Runner Limited. It's in fantastic condition and everything works great. Well, almost... The volume level from the rear speakers is very low. I've got the JBL premium sound system w/in-dash 6 CD changer, No navigation. Is there a fuse for an amp that powers the rear speakers ? How does the system work ? Any hints on what to check would be great. Even if I put the Fader on full rear, I've got to put the stereo on like 40 for it to be at a decent level. 40 with the fronts on will give my tinitis in 2 days ! Thanks for your help in advance !

well, their aren't seperate fuses for the rear/front. Basically if you hear anything coming from any of your speakers and very little from the rear you may have bad channels off your amp. The amp is a 10 speaker setup that powers everything.

As far what you can do to check... I really don't know other than to listen (which you already have). Is it both the left and right rear? Are you talking about the rear door speakers or the speakers in the very back that are up top?

It could be a few things...such as...

A bad amp....

Both rear speakers have gone bad....unlikely but possible

Bad head unit... if the rear channels aren't putting out as much of a signal as the others then they won't be as loud even after going through the amp.

Thats all I can really think of...besides that you may have it faded to the front and just don't realize it, but lets hope not.

Do this, then if you still cant find out whats wrong do yourself a huge favor and have a car-audio shop (such as a circuit city roadshop ) look at it. Ask for the roadshop manager or assistant manager to do the work, since they are generally the ones with the most experience.

To do a diagnostics on a system is usually $45 an hour...(reason i said to ask for the most experienced, is to get the system troubleshot the quickest)..
