Hi I am a bit new here and I have to jump right in with a serious problem that is upsetting and boggling. I am not a total mechanic at all so bear with me lol.
I have a 92 4runner which I love and I am trying to get it to run right. It started with other problems that I fixed to get it running right. I picked up a used transmission and new radiator to actually get it going. Now then I started having a problem where I would lose power and sputter out idling and when trying to even give it gas. So I started with replacing the filters. Then replaced a fuel pump which was bad as well. To no avail. Then fuel pressure regulator and a mass air flow. No luck replaced plugs ,cap ,rotor and wires . No luck. Then after another look we then finally replaced the entire upper air intake system, gaskets and a sensor. Also an O2 sensor and a new computer to boot. Still the sputtering remains. Now in 1st gear its fine as soon as I shift into second gear and hit 2000 to 3000 RPMS I lose power and violently shake sometimes. Now sometimes it will also run fine as long as its warmed up and the gas is eased slightly onto. Also when I say ease on the gas like it takes a while to get up to speed. Its frustrating and expensive. Lucky I have a mechanic and a credit card . We just can figure out what is going on. Now I will say that it was throwing a lean code but now the engine light isnt even on. So we have no way of narrowing down what the hell is going on... Please help me if you can guys. I really love this car and I dont want to sell it .

I have a 1995 4 Runner 4WD auto with similar issues. I cleaned and replaced every filter nd fluid available and still have same low power and erratic shifting problems. I found a crack in the air intake hose between the AFM and the throttle body. I think the ECU fuel/air curves are way off since whenever I apply gas, the engine sucks air through the crack instad of thru the air filter and consequent AFM. Therefore the 3VZE is running super lean. Have you checked the intake hose for leaks between the AFM and throttle body? Also, in the throttle body is a small hole which leads to the Idle vacuum control. You may want to clean this too with carb cleaner?
 
I thank you but as I will check with my mechanic I believe that has all be checked. I will bring it up thou.

I think your mechanic is in love with your credit card! It seems as if you're just throwing parts at it hoping that some random part will cure your issue. Have you checked all of your vacuum lines? That would be my first step, check vacuum lines and then verify timing.

Download the FSM on the top of this forum and go from there.
 
I will do that but my mechanic is my friend so he actually only charged me parts and not labor . So I will Down load that is it under quick links ?
 
I agree with SV Dude, start with the FSM and other internet resources to see if similar issues have occurred. I can tell you right now you do not want it running too lean too long or you will have an exaust valve issue as I do...no bueno.
 
Mine had the same issue. I will only do it when its cold. Ounce its warmed up it run smooth. I changed out my temp. sensor and worked fine since.
 
Well when we hooked it up to a fuel pressure testing device we discovered that at wide open throttle it was @ 5 PSI to 0 PSI. So what was done we dropped the tank again changed the fuel pump and lines and it is running like a ddream. So much so I almost got pulled over as soon as I got her fired up .
