Help and Opinion on Modifying

Hey Guys, I'm new to the forum. I've own this 96 4Runner since it had 80k and now its at 275k.

I'm planning on some modifications later on, but for now I was thinking of doing dual out exhaust, any opinion on how I should get this set up? What muffler should I get? I want it sounding mean, but nothing too loud where cops would be on my ass...

How about the new engine/tranny/TC/front & rear diff mod.......lol

I know Toyotas are tough vehicles, but you're on the home stretch with that rig man. You start modding this thing and pounding on it you will blow it up pretty easy.

If you're careful you have 100kish left (if everything is original).

^^^ Ummm really? He never said he was going to "pound" on his truck, he asked for exhaust opinons. Last time I checked your vehicle wont go into total shutdown mode from adding exhaust... People here have many more miles then him and a lot of mods.

As long as it was well taken care of (seeing that you have owned it since it was still fairly new at only 80k) I would imagine you kept up with the maintenance. It has a lot of miles, but doesn't mean its on the verge of "blowing up".

Go ahead and mod it. Do whatever you would like, don't destroy it and keep up with the maintenance and you wont have a problem.

Look on youtube for different exhaust systems on what you want. But remember, its only a V6 so you will not get that "V8 sound". But a V6 still sounds very good imo. I like Thrush mufflers, cheap, good quality for the price and sound VERY good for only $30.
 
What about dual outlet? I've seen it on some, based on what I saw it looks super nice, but when I get the chance to look underneath it looks pretty messy.

I mainly use this thing to commute and recreational uses like going snowboarding and surfing. I keep up the maintenance, some douche-bag stole my catalytic converter, so since I'm at it, I might as well put a nice set up in. haha Engine runs like a beast, besides the cat being gone, it has a coolant leak somewhere, which I'm trying to pinpoint where, and a starting issue that I know for sure is my starter, so I'm putting that into play after I fix the exhaust problem.
 
If you want to run dual exhaust just get a single in dual out muffler. You will not really notice a increase other then sound so no point in doing a expensive setup. Just my opinion.

I looked at making mine a dual outlet setup... Even bought a matching TRD Tip for the other side.

The exhaust shop gave me 2 options:

1. Lose my spare tire to make a clean route without melting the tire.
2. Have a messy 2nd exhaust pipe that looked awful.

I agree with you that the dual looks really good, but the underside has to be 'clean'. Maintenance wise, when's the last time you changed the timing belt. Being that you've had it for 200k, I hope you have changed it at least once. :)

What part of the East Bay are you from?

Yeah I didn't a long and extensive research just now and you're right. It's not going to look clean. Well single out it is!!! The engine was rebuild at 200k because I blew the head gasket so belt was changed. Haha failed.

Not to be a hater but at 275k miles original I would definitely be saving for a new engine or engine swap. At least save a $1000 in truck money specifically to protect you in case something does happen.

I did......100k left is an accurate estimate (if it has been well taken care of for most of its life).

If he is smart he will be sure to put some $$$ aside for a major component replacement, that's all I'm trying to say.......
 
No I know for sure I gotta set some money aside for those rainy days. Car has always been kept up too, major and regular maintenance all been kept up. The car runs like a champ! Maybe I'll join the 400k club soon. LMAO

I just figure since I have to fix some stuff up, I might as well upgrade.

I'm going with a single outlet.

Once I get that done I'll post some pictures and videos!
 
I bought a spintech and I love how it sounds! I get complements on it all the time! I personally like the factory tip the best so I had a muffler shop just put in a high flow cat and my spintech muffler into the stock system and I love it! it is loud and sounds good! not to raspy!

I have never heard of Spintec, but that sounds legit! Did you kept the same stock piping? Also does it drone when I hit higher rpm as well?
