HELP! Intermittent Stalling, tried everything.

I will say that when my brother's EVAP check valve died on his Silverado the engine stalled on him a couple of times. But the code appeared first and he was too lazy to fix it for some time.

Its weird though that the fuel pump replacement last year cleared up the problem.

Yes that us weird. Maybe it had something to do with the weather at the time, maybe it wasnt warm enough.

I have an update but nothing significant. So about three weeks ago I purchased a new OEM canister from Camelback Toyota. The nice thing is that the unit comes with both valves which cost about $100 a piece if you were to buy them separate.

After I installed the canister, I was unable to really test it because the weather hasn't been warm enough lately. However, there was one day the weather hit about 80 degrees and my rig did NOT stall. I can only confirm this resolved the problem when the weather is consistently over 85 degrees. I will keep you guys updated.

I recently had a day of intermittent stalling at idle when it was really warm outside. Cleaned the IAC/TB and it seemed to idle slightly higher but the temps dropped below 80s and I haven't been able to recreate conditions.

I've had a P0441 (bad vacuum purge due to VSV) kick on consistently when temps get above 80F, but I've never heard of it causing any serious problems. Since we don't smog here in SC, I've just let it go.

I wonder if this could be the cause of that temporary problem.

It could be, if you read my earlier posts you can see the things I've replaced. I never got any codes BTW.

Have you checked the wiring harness for the igniter?

It's in the passenger side inner fender. If you want, with the truck running give individual wires a tug to see if the are fully seated.

You can check other harnesses the same way.

I was going to update but haven't been able to really test the new EVAP canister because the weather hasn't been that warm lately. The weather has to be between 85 to 90 degrees to really test it. Besides that, so far so good. I can hear and feel the purge valve on the canister working away. I will definitely update when the weather heats up.

It is truly a mystery. After replacing the fuel pump I thought for sure I was out of the woods. You can imagine the look on my face when my T4R stalled again.

I'm having this problem now but mine happens at the stop light but once I give it gas it's fine. Before I spend 300 on canister is yours still running good?

I think I'm having the same issue on my '99 with 5-speed manual. Every time I push the clutch in and let the RPMs drop to idle, the engine dies. So stop signs and red lights are no fun to re-start. As soon as I give it any amount of throttle, it's fine. It runs strong and has no issues otherwise. No codes according to Torque app. I just replaced the plugs & wires due to a mis-fire and rough idle. It runs great now but still stalls at idle.

So is the evap canister an OEM item or should I look at Napa?

1998 4runner intermittant stalling

Had to comment about people who follow through and report results after installing replacement parts. Thank you very much! Had this problem for a year or so and finally found your post. No CEL, ran beautiful otherwise, pro mechanic could not find the problem, no codes. I was on the verge of replacing the 4runner which my wife has owned for 18 or 19 years and loves dearly. I had replaced almost all the parts you had and still had the problem. What did the trick for me was you reporting hot weather and no codes/CEL. almost a perfect match. My idle would fluctuate before dying. Ordered the same part from Camelback Toyota and the problem was solved. In the 90s here in Florida and the 4runner is running perfect. Hey there - reading these to find answers. Local mechanic has had my 99 Limited for 6 months now. Roughly 260k miles.

He has replaced fuel pump & filter, installed all new coils and plugs, installed a new ignition switch, checked all fuel injectors and gas lines, checked all sensors and relays, and most recently installed a new computer. 6th cylinder was misfiring and after coils and plugs did not fix, Toyota told us we needed a new computer.

The truck is still stalling out. After the new computer, I got it back for about 2 weeks. The stalling started up again and was much worse. Before, it would do it as I was cruising down the street -I could bump into neutral, re-crank, and not have problems for a few more days. Now I can barely get the car into reverse before it dies on me. There is no trash in any lines, no codes are coming back when plugged up to a reader.... I do not know of anything else that could cause this. I got a great 8 years out of her, but I want to keep my baby until the wheels fall off. No aftermarket parts have been installed. Any ideas???

Have you replaced the crank position sensor? Not to be mistaken for the cam position sensor. A bad crank sensor will cut the engine out while driving without any warning. Mine was caked full of oil. It was one of the things ive replaced as well which solved my stalling. To this day the stalling has not come back. Be sure to buy Denso. Good luck.

I've had stalling issues before, the crank
sensor was getting wet from a coolant leak. I could take some contact cleaner and spray it on the sensor and it would run fine until the sensor was wet again.

I have a feeling this could be your issue, spray some cleaner on the sensor and see if your stalling goes away...Good luck

New member here so I apologize for digging up an old thread. Very helpful to get me started but I have a slightly different issue to add.

Once the stall occurs I have a hard time getting it to restart. Will crank but will not fire. No warning before hand. Will stall sometimes as I am looking it over at idle. Stock vehicle. No codes. Once restarted runs rough but will idle out and seems to run fine.

Back story is I have not started the troubleshooting yet but just doing the research first. I have owned the vehicle for about 8 months with no issues. Purchased it from original owner who let the maintenance slip as he didn't use the truck as often prior to sale.
