Help me buy a 4runner..

Im seriously considering purchasing a 2007 4Runner 4x4, Sport, V6, grey exterior, black cloth seats, 80k miles, no rust, from a private party...

KBB excellent is 15,500

NADA retail is 17,000


trying to negotiate a price.... How much would you be willing to spend over book value for a 4runner?

I'm torn..

whats the sellers asking price? i won't spend much over book value because its not like they're rare vehicles, but if its worth it, maybe
 
he wants 17,800...

KBB Very good is like 14,600, excellent is 15,500

NADA, said retail 17k... but I dont know if that means like at a dealership, I dont think thats private party.. maybe Im wrong.
 
Retail means dealer price, thats why its higher...

We got an 06 SR5 woth 89k from a dealer here in PA for 14,100...accordinf to kbb, he should realistically be asking 15ish...ask why hes so high, where hes getting his numbers, what his bottom line is ans how.big of a hurry hes in...

07 still has no traction control off button, 2008 got it...if you care
 
Did you run a Carfax and check maintenance history? If the Carfax is clean and it has been maintained by the book I'd probably pay asking price if it is between those two numbers. It took me a full two years to find my '06 V8 Limited - had 65k miles, clean Carfax and good maintenance history. Having lost several others to trying to underbid asking price I was there within 2 hours of the ad hitting Craig's List, and two other people showed up as I was doing the paperwork. I paid every penny of the very reasonable asking price happily, didn't hurt it had a set of brand new Geolanders on it.

The local Toyota dealer charged me $25 for an oil change with me supplying the M1 5/30, when I went to get it the Used Car Manager was waiting for me and practically begged me to sell it or trade it in on a new car. He told me they have about a 5-day turnaround on Gen4 4Runners, they are their most in-demand used car. Given this is DC area, where everything is getting more expensive daily.

EDIT - just saw the asking price, man that is high. Were I still looking I'd bid in between if it checks out and be ready for someone to buy it at asking. And yes, "Retail" is from a dealer and meant to include the reconditioning work they often do.

The KBB and NADA numbers are also averages...some are sold at ridiculously high prices to idiots who do no research and spend all their money and others are sold to those for next to nothing...so use that in your favor in buying a rig! Just because it says it worth that isn't because it is fact...it's an average throughout the country...

I spent $22k on my 05 with 23k miles on it in Seattle, WA...
 
16000 if that but thats my opinion.

Question how much is it worth to you?

for his asking price it would be more beneficial to grab a new vehicle for a few grand more i just can't see paying 18000 for a 10 year old car no matter how bullet proof it may be
 
I missed out last week on a 2008 with the same specs for 17,477 at the Toyota dealership. Sold in a day. But that out the door was like 20k when it is said and done. Tax. Tag title. Dealer fee.


Just trying to figure out when it becomes unreasonable to purchase a used car. I still have to prob put in 1k in upgrades immediately. More down the road.

But my max is 16k I think. I have him asking 17k now. Which I still think is too high.

If it's private party, go low. Ask what a dealer would take on a trade.

15500 now and i would clearly tell him you can just as well go to the dealer to where is 20 grand for a year younger and certified. I would research toyota dealers just so you have references in your back pocket incase he tries the but its this and that etc etc. Its a car i don't pay for personal value like most sellers do try and pull.

my issue is this... the car is 3 hours away.. making it a 6 hour trip...

I could show up with a cashiers check and a couple grand to negotiate.. Or I could do a bank transfer if its not on a weekend.. and i would need to ship it to me (200 dollars)..


I've texted back and forth... but it was originally posted at 19,800.. way off base.. Some back and forth.. its at 17k...

So I have to be ready to pull the trigger, but also be ready to walk away.. I told them i was closer to 16k max and think its worth 15k without looking at it..

So IDK.. I just cant see spending 17k on a 9 year old car... realistically I don't think one should pay over 15k..


but the chase is getting frustrating..

Offer 14. 17 is stupid expensive. Didn't pay that much for mine from a dealer SR5 with the 'premium package' for the 07 runner. And it had 84 or 85 on the clock. At the end it paid around 16 for it which included, weather tech, paint touch up, towing package, and the best extended warranty the dealer offered. Car was listed at 16.5 got them down to 13 extras got it back up. I would never pay over book value, don't waste your hard earned money. Good luck!
 
I'd say to never pay full book or over NADA. I tend to look at it as an investment even if I plan to keep the car. If you over pay while it's not the end of the world but it's something that you can't get a solid return on should you want to sell. Banks usually don't go over 15% of NADA in my area and i'd imagine that is a standard nationwide. If you are offering cash i'd offer maybe around 15 since KBB is lower and that works out to your advantage. In the end it is really only worth what you are willing to pay. It sounds like a nice 4runner and you will love it!
 
I think $16k is reasonable. I wouldn't go higher. It all depends on how patient you are and how much money you have to burn. Took me a few months to find the right truck.
 
Id say I dont believe it...but that happened to me... '06 SR5 V8 w/ 93k, they were asking 17,500. I said," dude thats way over even excellent retail". Claims he had a guy come the next day and buy it for that...


There are people who dont do their research and it's sad...Americans are just too lazy

I've looked at 9 so far.. I'm always off by about 1k dollars.. looking back.. there was an 06 sport 92k miles, florida car.. it was on Ebay and craigslist.. guy wanted 18500 for it.. I went back and forth at how ridiculous that price point was and I offered 13k (slightly over book value).. ended up selling for 14k on ebay.. Id probably take it today at 14k..
