Help me figure out this noise please!

Was there ever any luck with this? It seems people were still playing the guessing game.

This noise is bothering me more and more. I notice it does it more often when it's colder outside. And it went from doing it 1-2 times occasionally on a cold start to 3-5 times occasionally on a cold start. I want it gone.

its got to be that. something is either jamming or not getting fluid to it because my truck will make the noise for at least 30 seconds if i start to pump the break pedal a few times it will go away in under 10 seconds. I dont know if pumping the pedal forces fluid through the break booster or some sort of brake line that connects to the booster system but i do know that the noise' duration is a lot shorter if i pump the brake a few times.

I think it's the motor also, especially if something is changing or noises go away when you pump the brake pedal. The only way to know for sure, maybe try to locate a fuse or relay that you can pull for it when you hear the noise and see if it disappears

Yeah. That was my next step. But I was going to hook the pump up to a multimeter and check voltage at a cold startup.

But I have been far too busy and my lower ball joint failed on me yesterday, so I have bigger fish to fry ATM.

ouch! hope nothing bad happened! I planned on replacing my ball joints somewhat soon for preventative maintenance, after hearing this i'm pushing it up the list a little.

It was actually the 4 bolts that held in the lower ball joint to the hub. I have never seen something so mind boggling. It had only 2 of 4 bolts in the hub and one was being held on by the rubber boot that goes over the LBJ, and the other broke off in the hub. I was lucky enough to have it drop almost a foot to ground in front of my house. I had been going 65 on the interstate not even 20 minutes prior.

I would strongly consider doing your UBJs and LBJs if your mileage is getting up there.

Oh trust me, I plan on doing a "how-to" for a couple components on my list, as I haven't found detailed/pictorials of how to do them. (i.e. - Brake booster and Charcoal Canister replacement)

And that ball joint failure at 65 mph would've totaled my truck. I am extremely grateful, for whoever was watching over me.

Ive found a short term fix... possibly long term. When i come home for the night i put the e-brake on. Simple as that. Last week i did this everyday and i never heard the noise. I forgot to do it last night and this morning the noise was there. For whatever reason having the e-brake on has worked.

...Noise is back. Guess it just decided to take a vacation for a week or so.

Just thought I'd chime in here, I had this noise too but much worse than yours. It was definitely the brake booster pump. Mine was advance to the point where it had developed a metallic clang at the end of the "goose honk." I'll upload a video of it both inside the car and in the engine bay when I get to my computer. I replaced the pump with a new complete assembly and all was good. FYI it is the gas charged cylinder connected to the booster assembly and I could not find this part to be sold separately.

I talked to a mechanic and he said that the entire brake booster assembly has to be replaced.... the cheapest used one is $500 if your luck enough to find one at a salvage yard.
Does anyone know if you can use a brake booster from a 2000 runner? that solve future problems since those can be taken apart and fixed. Whereas the 2002 models cannot be taken apart. (From what I've heard) Is that correct?

I also ran a scanner on my truck. It pooped out 4 codes that have to do with the brake booster assembly as well as the solenoid(s) has did anyone have that problem and was able to fix it without replacing the booster assembly? I can provide the codes if you want to know....

One of the mechanics that i talked to said the whole assembly has to come out and cannot be picked apart and fixed. Its all "one" part basically. I hope he is wrong because new brake boosters are friggin expensive.

Finally

I have been searching for a very long time to find out what is wrong with my 2002 4Runner (150,000 miles). It has been in the shop 5 times and they can't figure it out. But this is definitely the noise mine makes--but mine now lasts for at least 5-10 minutes. I will definitely replace the brake booster pump.

But unfortunately, now just after I had the brakes, calipers and rotors replaced a couple weeks ago, the brake light, VSC off, VSC track and ABS lights are sometimes coming on along with an alarm. They bled the brakes (twice) and it is still doing it. So any help on that would be appreciated.
