HELP! Need Wiring Diagram for Flasher Module- Turn Signal Relay

I am hoping that one of the Techs, or someone who has the wiring diagrams handy will help me out.

I am working on a mod, that many of you will want. I say this because on the FJ, many of us added this mod, and it is awesome.

I am working with the owner of Tapturn to create Tapturn for the T4R. I have sent him a flasher unit, and what I though were the right diagrams. Turns out it is a bit more complicated. But, when it is completed, we will have full Euro blinkers, and strobe function, and more!

If you have access to the signal relay, and wiring information, please help me out so I can help make this available to the 5th Gen T4R people!

I am looking for the diagram that goes with part 81980-60160.

Thank you for your help!

Nvm. I need one.

orderTAP.html

Had it in my FJ, and it was very useful for hazards to strobe like police lights, parking signals illuminate for up to 1 minute after locking or unlocking vehicle, and the ever popular Euro blinker that just needs a tap, along with a few other features...

I hope you guys can get this to work. My wife has the tapturn on her WRX and I love being able to just tap the stalk and get 3 blinks. The hazards with wig wags would be nice when I'm out in the winter inspecting plow teams.

@itschz is it the above that you are looking for? Or what exactly are you looking for?

I do not think there is any "published" info about what exactly is "inside" this module.

By the way, TapTurn is cool; I would want one, how much is it?

I am not sure on the price yet, as the flasher module is much more expensive on the T4R than the others. Tapturn will determine that once we get it done. I havent heard from them if the above attachment is working out..

Still hoping that more info will come out of this thread..

Hi, I'm the maker of TapTurn and need a little more info to get something working for 2015 T4R's that use flasher part number 81980-60160.

With the help of someone on this forum, I've got a T4R flasher in front of me, apart and almost completely figured out. I don't have the truck... but you do!

If I could see a circuit diagram of the flasher assembly in this truck, that would answer so many questions. But without it, by doing some experiments and answering questions, we could also probably figure it out.

Q1: First key question, if you disconnected the plug from the flasher, would the headlights continue to work normally. For both low and high beams, when you turn the headlight switch on, and use the high beam stalk switch?

I am pretty sure that when you disconnect the plug from the flasher, there will be no DRL function of the high beams. Confirm.

For the rest of the questions, the flasher would be connected normally.

Q2: When the truck is running and headlights get switched on to low beam, do the DRL function of the high beams continue to operate, or at that point, they are no longer used?

Q3: When you turn headlights to high beams do the low beams also continue to shine, so there are both low and high beams on, or just the high beams?

Q4: Is there a separate switch or feature of the truck that allows you to turn the operation of DRL off?

There are just a couple wires in the flasher harness that I don't have a good feel for what they connect to in the truck. I have a hunch, but would love to see a circuit diagram to confirm.

Pin 13 - hunch this input connects with the computer module that controls remote locking, and is used to make the signals flash when the truck is locked or unlocked.

Pin 16 - hunch this input connects with some circuitry or computer module that tells the flasher when to use DRLs or not.

All the other pins on this 18 pin flasher I've got figured out.

I'm thinking there's a difference between the 2010-2013s and the 2014-ups too. In the 10-13s, our DRLs are the bumper signal lights and shut off when the headlights are on - they just function as signals after that. 2014-up use the headlights for DRLs, right?

Scott-
Thanks for your hard work, as you can see, the T4R crowd will be all over this! Hopefully others will chime in so you can get the flasher assembly I sent you locked down, and we can test it and then start getting these in the hands of others.

For the 10-13's it may not be different if the lights light in different places, if it is controlled through the same relay. Based upon the stalk switch, the general concept should be the same.

Please, if any body has more diagrams or insight to help Scott, please do so. The TapTurn is one of the best mods out there!

just high beams I believe
Q4: Is there a separate switch or feature of the truck that allows you to turn the operation of DRL off? Yes, setting on stalk allows for DRL ONLY, parking lights with DRL, or headlights (with or without fogs

Hi Scott! I was about to buy a TapTurn from you for my 05 Legacy GT wagon before it was written off by a hail storm. I've wanted a TapTurn for the 4Runner since I bought it so I'm glad to hear you're looking at making them to fit these trucks.

I have a 2010 4Runner with the 81980-35030 flasher module. I'm guessing it's slightly different from the 2014/15 part that you have due to the relocation of the DRLs from the turn signals to the high beam but I'd bet that most other connections are the same. I've gone through a few sections of the 2010 EWD and compiled a list of the connections for each pin (1-18). This should be the same for all 2010-2013 4Runners. I've also attached the relevant 2010 wiring diagrams here so you can verify things as needed.

  1. 12v from 15A Turn & Haz fuse
  2. Left turn signal output to combination meter, rear signals, mirror signals
  3. 12v from 7.5A IG1 fuse
  4. Ground
  5. DRL input from Main ECU
  6. Left turn signal input from headlight switch (ground)
  7. Right turn signal input from headlight switch (ground)
  8. Right turn signal output to combination meter, rear signals, mirror signals
  9. Left turn signal output to towing socket (also supplies brake signal for trailer)
  10. Left turn signal output to front turn signal
  11. 12v from 30A Towing fuse
  12. Input signal from hazard warning switch and/or from Main ECU (for lock/unlock flashes) (ground)
  13. Empty
  14. Empty
  15. Empty
  16. Input from brake light switch (applies both turn signals to trailer socket for trailer brake lights)
  17. Right turn signal output to front turn signal
  18. Right turn signal output to towing socket (also supplies brake signal for trailer)

I would guess that all the inputs (pins 1, 3-7, 11, 12, 16) will remain the same on the 60160 part, but it's the outputs that will be different for 2014 and up. This 35030 module has separate individual outputs for the front turn signals (pins 10 & 17) so they can also be used as DRLs when the signal from the ECU comes through pin 5. The rest of the turn signal outputs are linked together (pins 2 & 8). The 35030 module also has to let the turn signals flash while they are being used as DRLs.

The other wrinkle is that the signals for the trailer connector run through this module (regardless of 35030 or 60160 I would think). Pins 9 & 18 supply the flashing signal for the indicators on a trailer and then they will both go solid when input from the brake pedal switch (pin 16) is received in the module.

As far as answers to your questions I can make a few educated guesses.
Q1: Disconnecting the flasher module shouldn't affect the regular operation of the high and low beams. The module should only make additional inputs (DRL) to the existing headlight system, it shouldn't be a critical link in it. Disconnecting the module should disable the DRLs (as well as all the other stuff it does).

Q2: DRLs should shut off when the low beams are turned on.

Q3: The 2010-2013 models keep the low beam on with the high beam; I'd assume the 2014-2015 models do the same.

Q4: Not on Canadian 4Runners of this generation, but I believe the American ones have an option to turn off the DRLs once the truck is running by twisting the headlight control down (opposite of turning on the lights).

If you need more help developing a TapTurn for the 2010-2013 models let me know, I'd be happy to assist.

Agreed!

I'm thinking there's a difference between the 2010-2013s and the 2014-ups too. In the 10-13s, our DRLs are the bumper signal lights and shut off when the headlights are on - they just function as signals after that. 2014-up use the headlights for DRLs, right?

Ya, I have seen the schematics for 2010 and can see how the flasher uses front signals for DRL when not signalling. I have figured out a way for TapTurn to work inside flasher for 2010 and it could even retain DRL, or a simpler version that does away with DRL altogether and just uses signals as signals and flashers.

Its the 2014 and up that use headlights that I am working on at the moment.
