Help!!! P0171!!!

No worries Durk! Thanks for pointing out that link again....I checked it again...and will try to spray inside that back side like Clemsonfan did.....hopefully that solves my problems! If not, I bought the 02 Sensor, and will replace that. I'd like to test the MAF like 8sm suggested, but I don't have a voltage meter....don't have compressor yet either! Just got the garage when I bought my house last April, and I'm still working on getting more tools! HA HA HA!

My next purchase is supposed to be a small 11gallon 3hp compressor. Just need it for small duties, like changing my tires over, and maybe running an undercoating gun.....

What sucks is that I have tested MAF's before with both a multimeter and OBD2 program. Both checked out perfect! So thats when I start throwing tools.

I ended up buying a new MAF from Autozone and it fixe my probelm.

I would try and find another person you may know with a Tacoma or 4runner of the same year (I think they changed the MAF in 99, and 96-98 were the same) and swap them.

MAF's are expensive for sure. :(

I ended up taking it all apart again today, and really cleaning it properly, as now I knew what to look for. I haven't test driven it yet, but it useally takes about 30 miles before the check engine light comes back on. I'll most likely take the truck to work tomorrow, and will be able to tell if cleaning the MAF solved my problem. If it doesn't, I'm going to try changing out the 02 sensor, since it's probably cheaper than the MAF and is already purchased.

As for borrowing someone else's MAF. Nobody I know has a 4Runner or Tacoma, that is the same age. My buddy that gave me the K&N filter, has a 2000 Tacoma, and well, everyone else I know....drives one of the Big 3...Ford Chevy, or Dodge....ha ha ha! I'm the only one who has sense! HA HA HA!

Sounds like a plan. Changing the O<sub>2</sub> is still worth it, probably, even if it turns out not to be the cause of your MIL.

If you had the newer MAF, you could get one from a Celica or a Lexus or several other cars. IDK about the earlier one.

It probably is a good idea....but I don't have all kinds of cash to throw at this right now.....:( Just splurged on the wheel and tire combo for my tire carrier, and right after spending that money....the wife's Impala craps out a battery, and now this issue with my 4Runner.....could have afforded to do the battery and the sensor....but not the tire and rim too! I hate that, you get a little ahead....decide to spend some cash on something that is fun, and then you need to spend more money on something that is ESSENTIAL! HA HA! Gotta LOVE life! So Gay

Just a regular Autoparts store....still gotta see if Cleaning my MAF cleared the code....then I'll know if I need the sensor on not.....

I don't know how much mileage you have, but eventually the o2 sensor starts "losing its slack" so to speak, and every time the sensor checks things it eventually looses proficiency. Probably best off swaping it out if you have 100k or more miles on it. I think mine went at around 120k or less idk because I been driving around with that check engine for a while.
 
Alright folks, I cleaned the crap out of that MAF, and no luck! I drove the truck only a few miles from work, and the light came back on! It seems as though the light is coming on sooner now. I ordered some Cat gaskets, and a MAF, and when we do the work on Saturday, we'll try to test the MAF. I'm hoping to figure out which piece needs to be replaced, and bring back the one that doesn't.

I'll keep you guys posted, but this work won't be done until Saturday. P.S. THe MAF cost me $239.00 Canadian.....before taxes......The 02 sensor was $238.00 after taxes!!! :roadkill:
 
Interesting. I saw a truck that had the same code. Dealer replaced the MAF and all was good to go. I would double check also to make sure you are still getting the same code. Also, make sure you reset the computer.

Yeah, I've been doing that. Actually, I've been disconnecting it when I start tearing apart the MAF, and then once all is done and re-installed, reconnect the negative terminal.

BTW, I went to the store today to get the MAF....it wasn't in...and the guy there told me it was now over $330.00 for a rebuilt one!!! That's with the Core charge!! Holy old FREAK!

I may just do that....however.....that's usually the price we pay for stuff.....shipping to Canada is what kills us. Anything you guys buy....usually costs twice as much here.
