Help! Paint or clear coat issue less than 1 year old..

So I just washed my 4Runner and was drying it off and felt a weird dry/gritty texture on the hood. I looked at it and it looks like maybe the clear coat is failing, or almost like someone took a scouring pad to it! It might be hard to see in the pic but is definitely noticeable in person. You can almost see swirls in the second picture... WTF?!

Is this something that the warranty covers? I haven't done anything to it other than wash it as normal. Would a simple wax and detail take care of it if the dealership won't?

Thoughts?

So, you're saying that concentrated area of circular scratches (swirls) just happened by itself? And the rest of the paint on the hood all around it is untouched, except for the spot of swirls right beside it going in the opposite direction?

I swear someone took a magic eraser to your hood.
That looks very intentional, and I don't think you could convince a dealer otherwise.

That looks like abrasion. No you're warranty will not cover paint issues due to abrasives. Best bet would be hit the hood with some wax and see what goes away.

That's what it looks like to me and judging by the swirl pattern I agree that a dealer probably won't cover it.. Don't know why someone would do that intentionally though in such a random spot on the hood... Frustrating non the less.

Although I did have it washed and detailed back in February... Hmmm

Eh, I'll take it to a detailer and see if that shit'll buff out, otherwise I can justify 3m wrapping the hood in matte black! :reddance:

You mentioned, twice, that it looked like the clear coat was failing, and implied (by asking about warranty) that it would be a manufacturer defect. From that, it did sound like you thought it happened on its own.

IMO, from the pictures it doesn't look like the clear coat is gone (can't tell for sure). If that's the case, it could literally buff out :nerd:
But I would be concerned with how it happened in the first place.

Had that same thing happen to my wife's car. Except many more swirls. Turns out a family member over-sprayed their fence stain and her car was down wind. He tried to clean it, but their were still swirl marks. My only point here is that someone could have splattered something and tried to wipe/scour it off. Hope that helps in some way.

I'm sure any reputable detailers can buff it out. Should be a quick fix. Nothing to panic about.

Okay, so I went out and bought a buffing, compound, polish, wax kit. Took me about 30 minutes. Looks and feels almost new. I'll have a better idea how it looks tomorrow in the sunlight. Crisis averted... for now...

You're good man, I was a little frantic when I first saw it and wasn't in the mood for sarcasm. Hope you accept my apologies for calling you a troll/ass hat.

The Homer did have me laughing though... especially the fact that it was 10 minutes long! (Don't worry I didn't spend 10 minutes watching it hah)

I live in an apartment complex so who knows how it happened. I'm always giving up my garage to the wife because parking is a real B**** and even though my one request was to live somewhere that had a garage for my 4Runner, well we see how that turned out.

My experience with our 2015 Camry XSE. It's the aqua Blue color with silver specs and clear coat. (Since not available) The paint on the front could literally scratch with your finger nail and it was a chip magnet. I took it back to dealer and started documentation trail and pictures. Took about 4 months but finally got them to cover complete repaint of front half of the car. Took detailed documentation and pictures. They finally caved when I asked them to look at the Camry Loaners and certified pre-owned Camrys on the lot and compare. All had more mileage and substantially less chips.
