Help selecting a taser for my wife

Hey guys,

As the title states, I want to get my wife a taser. She has a new job that has her working into the night and when she leaves she will be the only person at the office. I just want something easy to use and compact. I've read some mixed reviews about the axon tasers the police use, Seems half the time they fail to actually subdue the person. If anyone has any personal experience with a particular brand or any insight on where I should look it would be much appreciated

Are you looking for a "stun gun" or a taser?

A stun gun is device with two fixed prongs that requires direct contact. Cheap ones are useless and ones that actually work are most likely outside the legal limits.

Tasers, OTOH, fire two leads and don't require direct contact (but the leads need direct skin contact) and ones that work are prohibitively expensive.

Both types also require extensive training or else these "non-lethal" weapons become lethal or useless.

I'd recommend either pepper spray (with training) or a high intensity flashlight/strobe.

If you get pepper spray, either get a big can (easy to find and grab in a purse) or a keychain one IF she will have the keys in her hand.

Part of proper training for both stun guns/tasers and pepper is to be exposed to the effects - is she prepared to do that?

Does your wife want a taser, or you want her to have a taser?

Self defense readiness is a mindset more so than a hardware issue... Situational awareness is a huge part of that, along with hardware training should you choose to use it.

I agree with the pepper spray recommendation, I feel it is a more effective tool than a stun-gun or tazer in that it will probably buy her more time to escape, provided she does not spray herself in the process, which includes the wind throwing it right back at you.

She knows how to use pepper spray and I was going to get some classes scheduled at a local gun dealer but I was just looking for insight on a brand or model of taser. I do not want a stun gun I want something that can be shot at a distance. She said she would feel more comfortable with the taser and this isn't really something I want to push off because worse case is there will be a time she needs it and I want her to have it.

Why not just consider a real firearm?

Reliable, work well at a distance, can be fired more than once, and it most certainly meets your criteria of "disarming"

Her job won't allow her to carry a firearm, they approved the taser if its kept in her purse and locked in her desk. She works with care givers who help children with mental disabilities. Honestly I'm surprised the taser is allowed.

Here you go. Probably the best available - but - the downside is that it looks like a toy gun so kids are more likely to play with it.

Yup, that's the one I had my sights on already. Its paired with the noonlight app that notifies police when the taser is used. The black looks less like a toy then the yellow.

Reliable, work well at a distance, can be fired more than once, and it most certainly meets your criteria of "disarming"

That looks like typical Chinese crap. 150 lumens is a joke and I doubt that the "stun" does much of anything.

For this sort of stuff, you need to go with a proven brand from a reputable retailer.

On the other hand, it must be good because it has the words "Police" and "tactical" in the name.

Another vote for the Taser Pulse + and some Sabre 3-in-1 pepper spray.

Got the Sabre pepper spray already. Also I was looking for a taser compact enough to fit in her purse. I think the pulse+ will be the one i go with.

Sounds like she needs to get a little .380 and if any nosy snoops happen to glance it she can tell them it's her taser. I've seen way too many videos of tasers malfunctioning to ever even want one for free, and if yo miss with that one and only shot you get, all bets are off. Way better off with a fogger/cone spray, IMO. There was one vid just out today of cops tasing two early 20s in Atlanta and neither one was effectively incapacitated. Saw another vid years ago of a cop getting a direct hit but it just lodged in the guy's puffer jacket and cop got shot multiple times, almost died. I bought my gf some UDAP 3P Jogger Fogger, I'd also trust Fox but trigger mechanism looked a little less easy for her to use on that one.

Crackling of a stun gun is loud. Stun guns would not necessarily take out an assailant. Police issue have similar problems in some situations. Think of it as a legal deterrent. The deterrent of the sound helps her keep her distance.

They do make some with a security key. When removed it's enert. Any kids that find it can't hurt themselves. She would have it at the ready before exiting a building.

Be very careful about where you buy those items as well. The amount of counterfeit items on Amazon is staggering, so you need to check who the seller is.

There is no way to "test" a pepper spray to assure that it works, so you need to rely on the manufacturer that the device will work as intended.

Finally, a comment about passing off a firearm as a stun gun - at best, it will get you fired (and, most likely, a trip to the police station to sort out the legality of the handgun and the legality of ownership) and - depending on the job - could be a felony. And that is assuming nothing bad happens with that gun.
