People swap to spring over axle all the time to gain clearance for off road use.

I'm building up an old Sears farm trailer. It has a 2-inch square (actually C-channel) axle that is rated for 1500 lbs.

Regarding spacers, I run them on both my 4Runner and my trailer. I have a set of adapters that converts the original bolt pattern to 6x5.5 to match the tow vehicle. It turns our I needed that extra offset too, due to the depth of the toyota rims.

As my camp gear is probably less than 500lbs and my trailer is about the same, I ended up swapping out the leafs for set of older 4Runner leafs and then added shocks. I found that the original 1500lb rated spring pack was far to stiff for offroad use, considering the light load I was carrying. It sucked getting to camp and finding that 10 of my canned beers had popped due to the rough ride. I now drive a bit slower with trailer too:happy:

Thanks for the responses, that expedition portal has some great build information and @MTD and Dirtco's trailers are both beyond awesome and unfortunately beyond my skill level to construct. Been a pencil pushing kind of guy my whole career, would be nice to learn to weld!

I bought a set of leaf springs from a 95 wrangler and welded them on my utility trailer with a spring over. Used the shocks from the wrangler as well. Works pretty good. was able to source the parts from craigslist and quadratec
