Help with purchasing a snowboard/ski rack

I'm trying to figure out which Thule system to buy. On their site, they ask the make/model of the car and also ask if you have a roof rack AND if you have factory cross bars.

Well obviously I have the parallel racks, but I do not have the cross bars. I was going to buy the OEM cross bars from Sparks Toyota for $102. However, when I tell Thule that I now have the OEM crossbars, they still say I require the Thule load bars??

Can anyone clarify this? I'm having a hard time seeing how this all fits and works together.

I am not familiar with the Thule system but I am using the Yakima big powder hound on the stock cross bars with no additional hardware....

In the pic below I am carrying 3 sets of skis and one or two(not sure of how many) snowboards

I was thinking this post might help you see how this all fits and works together.

Mike, I meant where the stock cross bars come into play. But I found out, they don't. Thule asks if you have them on their fitment guide, but apparently it doesnt matter if you do or don't because they sell their own cross bars (they call them load bars)

except if you use the OEM ones in the case like Japsfinest. But for the sliding Thule rack, I don't think that would work.

I'm going to just buy the Thule load bars and not buy the OEM bars.. since I think that will allow the whole assembly to sit up higher and allow for the sliding snowboard rack (thule 91726 if anyones interested)

Thanks guys!

If you get the Thule bars you can use the rack for more i.e. Bikes, kayaks, etc. They are way stronger than the OEM bars.

I have the Thule Universal Pull Tops and I can tell you now that I would've rather purchased the Yakima Fat Cats. The Pull Tops are not worth their price -- for some reason, the plastic housing at the ends covers more than it should, eating up a few inches of ski/snowboard space. This might not seem like a lot, but it actually makes the rack just a little too short to fit all that it claims. I actually had to used wire cutters to get rid of some of the plastic material covering the ends (if you bought it, you'll see what I mean). If you have snowboards with tall bindings, the pull top feature is useless, I think even with the Thule load bars, as your bindings won't clear the bars running the length of the car.

I also think the Pull Tops aren't very attractive -- they sit kinda tall and make me lose about 1.5-2 MPG. That may or may not break it for you, if you're set on a rack, it probably won't. My friend has the FatCats on his Land Cruiser and I really like how low profile they are in addition to the fact that you can use almost all of the rack length. Plus, the Fat Cat uses a ratcheting system which allows the racks to lock "taller" in case you're baselayers are thick (problem for me with the Volkl AC50's. The Pull-Tops use a locking mechanism.

If you're set on the Pull Tops and you have tall bindings that cannot be offset enough by the Thule load bars, I'd grab the factory racks. Well, hmm... maybe not. If you have tall bindings, you want to have some clearance so that the bindings aren't up against the paint on the top of your car. If you're a skier, the factory rack + Pull Top has enough clearance so that the bindings don't touch the paint, but not enough clearance so that they can clear the factory rails running the length of the car. Most ski racks you buy can be mounted on factory cross-bars -- the Pull Tops and the Fat Cats can for sure.

Hope I've been helpful. Go with the Fat Cats! You won't be sorry!

excellent info! Wow I wish I read this before I placed my order. Unfortunately it's too late and my order on amazon can no longer be canceled. I ordered the 450R feet, 53" load bars and the universal pull top.

I'm sure that I'll be happy with the purchase. If i had read your post though, I would have probably gone with the Yakima fatcat like you said though. No big deal, and no harm no foul. I'm sure the Thule will work out alright. When it's just 2 snowboards (mine and my gfs) the sliding out feature will work. When I have to carry 4 boards with 2 upside down I guess I can't slide it out because the bottom bindings will hit the factory rails.. oh well.

Thanks again for you post, very informative. I hope this thread maybe helps someone else in the future. :D
