Poor gas mileage and fuel smell
I had this recently discovered problem on wifes truck:
1994 4runner SR5 3.0L 3vze
My Vacuum Switching Valve is open at start up and the vacuum is opening the EGR valve, irradic Idle results. It runs crappy and a foul smell too.
How does this valve close, it will click and shut if I put 12v to it? Is it supposed to get electrified at start-up? New one does same thing.
I first thru parts because I was not enlightened:
EGR valve & pipes
cap
wires
rotor
modulator
R&C'nd TB & intake
C'nd DP
Fuel filter
Air filter
Vmaf
AC & heat work very good
All running lights work
Pull the modulator cap off and clean the internal filter. Its function is to clean the vacuum
to the EGR. If you pull the top hose off the EGR and the engine smooths out, the VSV hoses are routed incorrectly. This is a mistake made by mechanics when the plenom gets pulled, replaceing the passenger side valve cover gasket or pcv valve. under center sticking out under pas plenom are three tubes.

The Blue VSV is to the PAIR, The Red (brown) is to the Fuel pressure up and the Green is to EGR. Consult the under hood front right vac routing sticker.
These hoses get mixed up when the plenom is removed and the pcv is under there.

I use
Fuel Injector Service,Outboards,Marine,Motorcycles,ATV,Yamaha. He's cheap and they come back like new! Much Better MPG!
Also, there is a vacuum diagram under hood driver side. Hope this helps
