Help!

Now I've done it. I was doing some mods and must have screwed up somewhere. Now, the sunroof doesn't move, nothing on the overhead console works except the reading lights. I have no power on the climate control nobs and buttons. The truck still drives but without heat, it is pretty cold.

It is a 2013 Limited. I think it could be a fuse. Please help if you know which one.

The mode I was trying to do is to remove the overhead console and tapped into the sunroof motor power line to run a fixed power supply line to my dash cam. It was working, then it stopped and I lost power.

So a list of things that stopped working:
1. no power windows except the tail window
2. no power roof
3. no seat warmer
4. no lights on the center climate control nobs/buttons therefore no heat/AC

power seat works. Wiper/washer works. Power mirror works.

So please, if you know where I should check! Help!

Your owner's manual should list what fuses do what, from there I would check the easy stuff and disconnect your mod and see if that helps?

Just check the fuses! They are under the dash on the driver's side. There are also fuses under the hood, but I bet you just blew some fuses inside.

Unhook the battery first next time!

Yes, it is one of the fuses. I read the manual and some of the abbreviations don't make sense to me, so I just started pulling out the fuses from the drivers side one by one and one of them was blown. I took another fuse from the same box with the same spec and put it in there and all things work now. Need to go and get a replacement.

Yes, I'll disconnect the battery next time. I am such an idiot!

Now you need to figure out WHY the fuse blew. Is it because you accidentally touched a ground with power flowing through the wiring or is it because the tap you made into the harness is pulling too much current.

This is why you want to research your mod a bit before tapping into specific wires to make sure your additional circuit can handle the desired load without compromising the wiring and/or blowing fuses.

The fuse blew because I was careless and shorted something when I was working on the wires from the overhead console. I didn't do the research that you suggested, but what I tapped into was the power for the roof motor, and I was drawing power from that to run a cigarette charger type of power source for a dash camera. The result is very good: the dash camera turns on when the ignition is on and turns off when it shuts off. Since the power source is now in the overhead console, all that wiring is out of sight.

That's good, I am assuming that the camera uses a USB port? As long as the power draw isn't too much more than what the sunroof is going to pull (assuming you want to risk using the sunroof) then the fuse shouldn't blow when you're using both items.

What resets when you disconnect the battery on new (e.g. 2015/2014) 4runners?

Some cars have audio lock-outs and all other kinds of problems in you don't plug in a power supply on a diagnostic tool plug before disconnecting. Do the new 4Runners have this issue?

Meantime popped the hood, I have to say the design of the battery in the new 2015 looks like its out of 1971, screw caps for each cell, no window on top. I always replace batteries between year 4 and 5, so never have failures these days, but surprised as I would have thought they would all be AGM / MF these days.

Na, Flooded Cell Batteries are the cheapest to make, even BMW & Mercedes still use Flooded Cell batteries for most of their vehicles. The only Toyota that uses AGMs are the hybrids.

As for what needs to be done when you disconnect the battery, it depends a bit. If its been disconnected for more than about 5-10 minutes you'll want to relearn the idle of the vehicle (all Toyotas in the last 10years or so do this by the way)

All you need to do for this is idle the vehicle will all loads turned off for about 5-10 minutes. This will let the vehicle adjust idle and learn its baseline. Keep in mind all temporary memory such as learned driving habits, idle, fuel trim, ect. are reset as well as any DTCs pending and/or stored.

After you've done that, just roll all the windows up and down completely 3 times (rear included) to initialize the "Auto" Functionality. Reset your radio pre-sets and that should be it for the most part on the 5th gens, oh and relearn the Sunroof if you have one (just open it all the way and close it, that should be good enough.)
