Here's Some Help with Navigation Install

j0mama I also have a 04 Limited equipped with the JBL 10 speaker system. I was a little disappointed by what you wrote about the loss of the surround sound, if you use the Camry Nav.

I just went out and turned off the Surround feature, and it really makes a difference to the sound. So I don't think I want to lose that feature either.

So the Nav that actually came in our 03 and 04 Runners, its a 2 piece system right? So how hard is it to install the brain somewhere? Just basically have to hid the unit, and run wires right? If I were to go that route, I wouldn't lose the surround sound would I?

I just dropped off my unit at a local "repair" spot to see if he can change the color of the buttons..

Thats if you could find a 4Runner unit... Im looking also, since I would like the backup camera option. Im still trying to figure out what the other plugs on the back of the unit are for...

Let this shop know that if they fix the buttons, they will be getting a boat load of these things in the mail to do the same thing! Keep us posted...

How many extra plugs are on the back of the 04 Runner nav unit? I wonder if they might be for the CD/DVD changer, that I can't seem to find any info on? Or maybe the rear entertainment system?

If you look at the right edge you will see a regular antenna, beside that there is the small antenna... and above that is the GPS antenna.

Well some insight...

I dropped off my unit a couple days ago, to see if we could get the lights changed...

They are little surface mount LED's not bulbs.. So we removed one and are now searching to see if we can get the same size/voltage/style, ones to replace...

I'm on vacation for two weeks leavin Sunday, so I guess I will have to wait and see!

Jo,
Is that a picture of the back of a 4Runner Nav or a Camry Nav?

If its the 4Runner, I bet 1 plug is for the Camara. Another plug might be for that Changer. Not sure what all the other ones could be for, sure like to find out.

Do you have a picture of the brain unit?

I really want to install a factory Nav, but I want everything to work. I really hope for 05, the 4Runner gets a 1 piece unit. That will fit in our 03's and 04's.

ready to buy OEMVALUE for 04 Sport...questions

thanks to all the "pioneers" here. It looks like this OEMVALUE Nav is the way I am going to go. I can live with the GREEN lights (I think).

As for sound, good to hear voice prompts (wife insists on these), I assume they come over the speakers and mute the music.

Any other issues I should watch for, I have the standard stereo and speaker setup, someone here led me to believe the wattage will now be very very low....is that true?

Also, anyone add an aftermarket (or OEM) cd changer to the Camry NAV setup in their 4Runner.

THanks in advance.

Guys,
I dropped a note to the folks at OEMVALUE.com and here's some news regarding the 2004 CAMRY NAV being installed with the 4RUNNER 10 SPEAKER JBL SYSTEM:

<I>

Bryan,

You're the first one to hear this news. I recently had a Toyota technician, VERY helpful guy, try to install this unit in his 2004 4Runner with the already equipped 10 speaker JBL sound system. He knew this unit was not going to work right away as he was aware of the no sound issue, but he was determined to figure out a way to make it work. After looking at a few wiring schematics, he came to the conclusion that the 4Runner's JBL amplifier accepts different frequencies or something of the sort for sound (TX channels), something the Camry Navigation unit does not output. It is next to impossible to make these units work with a 4Runner 10 speaker JBL sound system.

The GOOD news. I recently ran across a Solara Navigation system that does not work with the Camry 2004 Amplifier. I told the Toyota technician to skim a few of the wiring manuals and tell me what's the difference between the two. One difference: The Solara has the ability for XM function. Second difference: The Solara has the TX channels, same as the 4Runner. I shipped the technician the Solara unit and I'm waiting to see if this unit will work with his application. He's almost positive it will, however you never know for sure until you actually try it out. Feel free to quote me on the message boards, I will be posting the new information soon on my web site if the Solara unit does work with the 4Runner's 10 speaker JBL sound system. Please note that the Solara unit will ONLY work with Solara and 4Runner JBL sound system. It's not a 10 speaker issue as the Camry unit works fine with the 2003-2004 Sequoia 10 speaker sound system. <B> If possible, please thank everyone on the message boards for me for all their research and posting all the helpful information. Especially Pete, he's done a lot of good work. </B>Thanks

TO [email protected]:

Gentlemen,
The word is quickly getting around the local forums (esp. T4R.ORG) about the NAV system that OEMVALUE is offering via the web.

See this link:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2151&highlight=navigation

and a user's page at: http://www.norgetech.com/navsup.htm

But there seems to be some confusion about the compatibility of this 2004 Camry unit
with the 10 Speaker JBL sound system that many of us have installed in our 4Runners.
Can you shed some light on whether this is true, and any specific work around so that
the NAV unit functions properly?

Specifically, here's what a user posted:

I just tried installing a 2004 Camry navigation unit into my 2004 4Runner equiped with the 10speaker JBL stereo...

The connectors look right but doesn't seem to work. Doing some research, I had a buddy from Toyota print off a copy of each wiring diagram.

2004 4Runner with JBL 10 Speaker Diagram

2004 Camry Wiring w/Nav

On the factory headunit (10 speaker) it has 2 extra wires going to the amplifer labeled TX+ and TX-, which I think controls the "surround" sound that the 10 speakers have, which the Camry nav does not. Plus there was no remote lead to turn on the amplifier.

Looking at the Camry diagram I noticed that the outputs can be used as Pre-Outs and tested and successfully used instead of going to the included Camry JBL amp, then converting back from HI-level (speaker output) back down to Low-Level, (thus causing less distrotion) I tested this, and it works fine.... I used a Pheonix Gold PLD (Line Driver) to make the output higher since the stock unit gives out maybe .200V wheras new head units (aftermarket)give 4V, to boost the line level sound. The only thing you lose, "which i found so far", is that you do not get the "Beep" sound when hitting buttons, since you are not connecting the beep wire from the Camry headunit.

After playing with that... Im still undecided if I am going to keep this unit, since I would have to use a seperate external amplifer, and lose the 10 speaker system.

Also! The factory JBL unit does not have a trim bezel, like the ones in the SR5's so you would have to order the silver dash piece to make the unit look good, since there are 1cm spaces around the left and right edges of the unit.

Anyone, have any other ideas?

The Answers..4Runner w/ JBL 10 Spk system..

Hi all. So here is is the answer to all the mystery... if you have the JBL 10 speaker system you need the Solara NAV system. It works great.. just plug it in an you are good to go. Now the details...

The Camry (and all other Toyota's ex. the new Solara) have outputs to the AMP for each speaker. If you really want all the technical details I will send them. The amp just listens to the line outs, amplifies, and plays the music.

The Solara and the 4Runner with the JBL 10 speakers system use high powered amps. they have a right and left pre amp out (much like what would be transmitted over RCA plugs in an aftermarket set up) PLUS (and this is important!) they have a pos and neg communication line. The AMP determines balance, fade, surround effects, etc. Your head unit just sends the information to the AMP.. it does some signal processing from the raw left and right channels. Since both the Solara and 4Runner JBL systems use the exact same pin outs... you just plug in the Solara NAV unit and you are good to go (you even retain the surround effects).. The antenna amp, rear audio panel, and steering wheel controls all work.. no mods needed. You jsut need to add the speed sensor and reverse sensor (and I guess parking brake sensor if you really want too.. but I don;t know what that would really buy you.) plus with the Solara unit you get the option for XM (of course the dealer wants $480 for the XM receiver!! YIKES!)

The non-10 speaker 4Runner system uses the same pinouts as the camry.. and other Toyota's.. so if you have that system, you can use the Camry nav. you will need to fix the annt amp issue.

IF you want to see this on paper.. obtain the following...
2004 Camry with NAV wiring diagram
2003 4Runner w/o NAV except 6 speaker
2004 Sorara with NAV
Stop looking at the 4Runner NAV diagrams..they are not much help.. the 4Runner NAV system uses the same pinouts off the ECU to the AMP.. but the NAV system is so different in lay out that these diagrams will just mess with your head.

I can send the pin outs if you are really interested.

If you have a camry system and you are trying to get it to work on a JBL 10 speaker 4Runner.. you don't have a ton of options. IT can work.. but you either need to completely bypass the factory AMP (so you will need a new one.. and our amp is 360 watts.. and sounds darn good).. and you will probably have to give up on having all 10 speakers work.. and surround processing is out the window. The other option (not pretty.. but i was think about trying it!) woudl be to splice the factory unit in with an additional harness. Then, you could have the factory unit send teh TX+TX-.. and that would hopfully run the system.. then you could combine the left and right channels and send them to the AMP from the NAV unit. If this did work (not sure it would) you would need to bury the factory unit in the sash somewhere. not a great solution.

Anyway.. my 2003 Sprot 4Runner is now happy with it's new nav system. Works perfectly!... and i retained the great factory sound system.

OEMVALUE was a HUGE help to me in getting this thing up and running. I couldn't do it without them, and I couldn't send a higher recommendation to anyone interested.

One final note.. I wanted nav period. I was about to drop a ton of cash into an aftermarket solution.. but what i found out is that the factory system is far supiorior to all other systems on the market. Try them all out.. you will see what i mean.

cheers.

A good reason you want to hook up the parking brake wire is to get into the diagnostic menus of the nav. it requires you to have the parking brake on..

OH this is great news!!

gregtay,
How much does OEMvalue want for the Solara model?

Sounds easy enough to install too, I like that you don't have to change out the amp or anything.

Hey,
What color backlighting does the Solara model have?

Time to start saving up to get one!!

Chris.

Parking Brake

No need for the parking break to be set to run the diags... works just fine on my system without.

a few small issues...

Well... tonight i realized a few small issues with the NAV system... first.. the color of teh backlight is green. oh well.. something i can certainly live with. I thought about trying to figure out if this is changeable.. but that will have to wait for another day.

something a bit more in need of fixing... I have sound... I have great sound.. i even get a beep when i touch the screen.. but I don;t get any voice nav. Nav is working, recalculating route is working.. jsut no voice. I think i know what is wrong. There are two extra outputs on the Solara NAV unit... IVO- and IVO+.. they are located at B12 and B13. These are wired to the INT of the AMP. I am guessing the Solara unit carries the voice through this channel. I think i can fix it.. just splicing in the IVO wires to the R+R-. Not sure if the auto volume reduction to hear the voice would work or not. Not something i am going to dig into right now.. i just wanted my truck back together. So some lazy weekend i will dig into it.

Lights - green to orange...

so if these are just surface mount LEDs... would it be possible to steal them from the factory stereo.. since it is orange? That was what i was going to try.

UPDATE FROM OEMVALUE!

<I>
Bryan,

It's been confirmed that the 2004 Solara Navigation unit works great with the 2003-2004 pre-installed 4Runner JBL 10-speaker surround systems, as opposed to the 2004 Camry Navigation system which works with all the other applications except Solara and 4Runner (unless the Camry amplifier is installed). Here is what my customer just wrote me (Toyota technician).

"Well.. I received the new NAV unit and managed to plug it in at lunch
