I am looking at purchasing a 2nd gen 4runner so I thought it would be a good idea to find a forum where I can ask questions and such. Sooo, hi! In fact, I have a question already. The 4Runner I am looking at right now is a 2nd gen with 213k miles. The current owner said that he bought it not running and fixed it (something about the belt slipping off). So he replaced the timing belt, idler pulley, hydrolic timing belt tensioner, iridium plugs, plug wires, distributor cap/rotor, ignition coil, igniter, refurbished Mass Air Flow Sensor, air filter, battery, fuel pump and fuel filter. This car does not have an alarm because apparently it was causing the doors to lock on their own. The radio intend does not work and the radio back light works on and off. It has a very slow oil leak as well. I asked him if the head gasket was good and he said no coolant in the oil and no oil in the coolant. It doesn't have any rust really. So sounds pretty good right? I was wondering what you would pay for this? Keep in mind this is going to be my first car so please don't recommend the superior 3rd gens unless I can find one for cheap. Thanks!

Couple of questions:
- what engine is in it? the 22R 4cyl, or the 6cyl 3.0
- did he compression check the cylinders (that would help find any head gasket issue)
- what ballpark price is he asking for it?
In my past I've gotten ahead of myself and been so excited to buy a T4R that I bought a few with issues. Have the compression checked if any doubts. I paid $75 to a local shop and they told me the '98 runner I just bought had a dead cylinder.
Before that I bought a cheap 2nd Gen '93 runner at an auction (AS IS, no returns). It had a 3.0 6cyl with a blown head gasket. Sold it cheap and barely broke even.
My advice: when in doubt, at minimum have an independent shop check the basics (aka compression, timing, oil pan, valve cover gaskets) as well as CV joints if a 4WD.....
