Hi, "new" 4Runner owner here!

What's up everyone...I'm a proud owner of a 4Runner now, a '99 SR5, dark green, with 140K highway miles. Obviously I bought it used, but love it nonetheless...running strong thus far.

Just wanted to introduce myself!


also, had a couple of questions:

1. Any DIY on how to fix the antenna?

2. Any DIY on how to fix or replace the lights on the AC controls (they are dark at nite..perhaps the bulb blew).

3. Any advice on how to change the headlight bulbs to make them brighter (perhaps Xenon like ) ?

Does your power antenna not work? when you turn the radio on does the motor run?

not sure about your vent control lights on the 2nd gen you just carefully pull the trim off and there are a couple screws that hold the controls on take the caps off and pull the control panel off and there is 1 light bulb to replace.

I know the headlights changed on the 3rd gen. so I can't help there but if you can get to the stock bulbs there are lots of choices of bulbs.

Again sorry I can't help much but I am a 2nd gen guy.

Hey man. Welcome to the board. Congrats on the new purchase!!

To change the bulbs in the AC unit, you would have to take out the panel. I am not sure how to do that in the third gen though. Also, you could upgrade your headlights to Xenons. Maybe you could get a set of Silverstars.

Welcome aboard!
All the 4runners I own had the power antenna problem. (The new '03 and '04 do not have the power antenna's.) I had power antenna problems with my '91, '97, and now, a 2000 4runner. Like Mikes4runner said, check to see if your antenna motor is working. If you heard a grinding sound or any sound, most likely the motor is OK; so the problem is a broken antenna mask.
I had to change the antenna mast. It costed about $35.00 to $40.00 at my local Toyota dealer. I had to take out the fender well (cover) off the right wheel. Once, the cover is off, you can see the antenna motor with the clear plastic covering. There is one bolt that holds the motor. Once you unbolt the motor, there are 3 or 4 screws (phillips) that holds the motor together. Also, you have to disconnect the electric wiring (one bolt).
(Most likely, the plastic antenna mast is broken inside the antenna motor.) Once, you unscrew the covering of the motor, you can see the white antenna mast. Take out the broken antenna mast. Get the new antenna and thread it from the opening on top of the fender to the opening of the antenna motor; ask someone to turn the ignition key, and the motor will get a hold of the antenna. Button everything up in the reverse order.

and MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION:
How do I get rid of the "smokers" smell in the car? I bought it used, and it is awesome except that it was owned by a smoker, so it stinks bad
