seems its always wiser to to power your ballasts from a properly fused, thicker gauge wire directly from the battery via a relay than the thinner OEM wires, no? for the very picture above of the burned up car!

Not always, it's always better to have them wired to the battery to put less stress on the electrical system and headlight harnesses. My 03 could not handle 35W ballasts without a relay. I didn't even try with my 08, I just did the full relay harness from the get go.
