HID project write up detail (pics)

lawwailok,

I'm definately interested in seeing your 4300k setup and comparison pics with the 6000k. I have 4300k, but sometimes I wish I've gone with 6000k for some blue and color. I went with 4300k because it's what OEMs put in their vehicles. My 4300k seems pretty yellow and more like Halogens but with a much more brighter intensity.

got my 4300k and somehow accidentally HAVE to install it right away (long story, i take care my store and won't close until 10pm and my wife work at State, wont get off work 10:30pm). don't know what made her think but tonight she called and said the headlights are not up. so i had to rush to her work place and see what was going on with the bulbs, ended up she thought the high beam should be ON also, that's why she kept saying the light weren't on..... i know, please don't make statement on my wifey, hahahaha. well, back to the topic, when i got there, of course all the low beams are fine, but since i was there already and i had the 4300k with me, i swapped them out at the place too. on our way back home, it's about 20 miles or so driving on freeway. i kept in the front pace and checked on the 4300k. it definitely is a lot brighter than the 6000k. no more bluish on the ground, in fact, like you said, it looks really OEM, white with a very very slightly yellowish. but the yellow don't bother me at all. i haven't drive it in person yet, but by what i've seen along the 20 mins driving, the visibility is for sure better than 6000k. color wise looks more OEM, but still retain the bluish at the cut-off when the car hit a bump or dip. i'll try to drive it in these a few days and experience the different. hopefully take some photos compare 4300k vs 6000k side by side.

The mod is ingenious. Granted, it won't be as wide a beam as HID projectors, but it's good for halogen projectors. Reducing the glare is always a priority.

You'll notice them to be a lot brighter since there is an 800 lumen difference between 4300k and 6000k. I've actually thought about switching to 6000k on the Accord, but I don't know if I want to give up how bright it is for a little more color.

Comparison pics would be great. If you don't mind, maybe take a pic with one side having the 6000k bulb and the other side having the 4300k bulb?

Nice work on the projector mod though! :)

yes, that's what i am planning to do, each side with different bulb. will take some individual on, and both on pictures. i try to do my best since i only have a DC, picture quality can't be guarantee perfect. but at least some comparison between 4300k and 6000k, in the case of 4th gen 4R projectors.
my first priority was just trying to make the visibility better at night so i go with the kit option. then i realize the glare/squirrel finders are somewhat annoying to oncoming traffic.

folks at hidplanet really taught me a lot, they are really experts and helpful. like all of us here who upgraded or going to upgrade to HID, while make the road brighter but minimize/eliminate the glare affecting all the other road users is the goal. i'll see how long i can stick with this setting. i am already thinking retro a TSX or S2k (something has the similar diameter projector, maybe a valeo) in my 4R is my next plan.

finally had a few spare time to take some updated pictures of the 4300k vs 6000k (sorry for the bad quality from my cell phone)

here is the 4300k on both side:

this is 4300k on one side: (please pay attention to the green plants in front of the windows, it is truly green color and cut-off is very sharp)

this is 6000k on same side: (look at the same plants, it doesn't look green because the 6000k lack of natural sunlight color, overall area looks dimmer, also cut-off is not as sharp as 4300k)

this is 4300k on driver side, 6000k on pass side:

this is both side 4300k, the light output on the ground. hardly find a dark place near my house:

this is about 130-150 feet away from the wall, there's too many street light on the side, can't really see clear how's the output on the ground:

thing was really sucks, found out one bulb was actually a little bit off focus, email the seller and hopefully there's an exchange item or something.

a few pictures above show the tail of the cut-off from the 6000k was pointing up, and the 4300k was flat and pointing down a little bit at the end. that was because the 6000k were re-based from a pair of 9006 based bulbs. the filament was slightly off by the standard measurement, that's why it caused that, and also very little blue at the cut-off from the 4300k but more blue at the cuf-off from the 6000k is due to that reason too. people probably would know i am using a fake kit due to the slightly blue from 6000k, but now using 4300k, it really looks OEM spec.
hopefully my friend can bring his professional SLR and take some serious nice pictures soon.

personally, i like the 4300k way better than 6000k. 6000k can't provide a brighter visibility at night, not as white as 4300k. when i had the 6000k driving at night, my eyes seem more tired because the blue tint color required more strength from my eyes to check the condition on the road. but using 4300k, my eyes feel a lot more comfortable even at a very dark country road.

i don't really care about the cool blue looking from 6000k, visibility is the first priority for me, so 4300k is better in my opinion.

just another comparison pictures between 4300k and 6000k. took place in the same warehouse area, similar distance. another examples of 6000k give you "cool" color versus 4300k give you "bright" color.

Thanks for the comparison pictures. I would have thought the 4300k would have been whiter than it is. The 6000k looks whiter to me but i do see what you mean about the more natural color of the view. The 4300k looks blue/green to me except on that one night shot with the road and sidewalk.

All this makes me wonder what that 5000k from Xenon Depot looks like.

That was a great writeup and find on that cutoff flap. Thats going to help allot of us out who are on the fence about doing this mod or have done it and have curoff issues.

yes, 6000k give you whiter light and color with very slightly blue, 4300k has natural sunlight white, it may contain a little yellowish. since my pictures were taken from a low quality cell phone, some true color wasn't capture. i am trying to have my friend use his SLR and take some nice shot and i'll post them up here.

i have a set of oem 4100k D2R(very first gen hid back in 2000) in my other car. when i first have the 6000k in my 4R, i thought it was cool! but after a few weeks of driving, my eyes just can't take the light from 6000k. it may look cool but definitely not as bright as 4100k/4300k. just my opinion.

lawwailok,

Thanks for posting the comparison pictures. It tells me I made the right choice and to stop thinking about going 6000k.

Very true.. i have 6000K and on a long drive without my foglights on (just lowbeams) really hurts my eyes, i never experience this on my wifes FX.. i just couldn't figure out how some people buy 8000K,10000K even 12000K and not have any complaint.. I'm not old either :D

lawwailok,

any plans on putting RX330 projectors along with tsx clear lens swap?

any suggestion? or if you already did? i know RX is a very simply direct swap projector and a lot of folks at hidplanet.com told me to. but one retrofitter also comment to me that i can stay where i am at, RX is not gonna be a big improvement, next step has to be a TSX/S2K swap will gain huge benefit.

I don't have any suggestion but I believe the projector from the RX330 will have a wider beam compare to our halogen projectors.

I wonder if the LS430 projector will fit or not. I would like to do a retrofit but I do not have a spare pair of headlights and they are too expensive.

My buddy is currently working on a retrofit for me on my 98 camry (fx projectors)

it does, but the retro expert told me don't waste my money on RX, i mean there's improvement but you won't be happy with them. it might be slightly wider but not a whole lot. LS projectors are an expensive retro, but so far they are pretty much the best, but due to their size, not all headlight housing would take the LS, ie: MDX housing are too small to fit LS in, not sure bout our 4R tho. and i get your meaning, i don't have extra money to get a pair of extra housing of my 4R to play with, they are just too expensive, about $550-600. so for now, i just stick with where i am at first, and once i can find myself an extra pair headlight housing cheap, then i'll go retro but not sure which projector yet, i'll see how complicate the housing inside and go from there.

Thanks for the comparison pics. I think I may just stick to the 4300k.

I'm thinking about doing a retro for the 4R too, but I'm not sure what projectors to go with either. I don't know if I want to use TL's, TSX's, or S2K's..

LS430 projectors from what I've heard are some of the best out there. A buddy of mine retrofitted LS430 projectors in his IS300. The beam pattern of those projectors are incredibly wide.

there's not a whole lot of 06+ housing has done retro yet. i may hold on til more people start getting into 06+ projector housing and see what is the best bet. since 06+ housing has a very nice finish shroud, i want to see if someone can do a nice retro without alternating the oem shroud, that would be nice. but the stock halogen projectors size are pretty limited to choices of retro, can't retro a bigger projectors in is the problem.

hid - inspection?

soo.. what do you do for your inspections? will a 4runner with hid's pass inspection ? I heard otherwise somewhere before on here...

what do you mean by inspection? as long as you aim it right and stay with OEM HID color, the chance you'll get pull over is minimal, you will not realize if it is a HID kit or OEM HID if everything done right without blinding people.

I think the FX should fit with minimal mod and believe the TSX/S2K projectors should fit in the 4Runner as well. I think our 4Runner's project is identical to the 07 Camry & 04+ Solara. Maybe GX/LX also uses the same projector.

how about go buy a 03-05 4Runner headlight to text out the retrofit? it should fit since someone on this forum already purchase an 06 headlight set and put it on his 04 or is it 05?
