Hid projector retrofit question

I can't speak for that exact company, but my friend bought a set of aftermarket HID projectors from a similar site, and i helped him put them in. I was REALLY dissapointed in the quality/ construction of the new lights. He paid over $400 , and if it was me - I would have returned them. They were made (in china) of very thin plastic, total ebay-type junk. just be sure of what you are buying....
 
There are a couple members here that will do it for u. I would trust them above a place like that. I think maybe brian sd_42 does them.
 
Thanks guys for the replies I didn't know other member would do them for me. I would prefer that over buying something that's online. If you guys know of the embers that do it let me know!

Btw your original link doesnt show pics on my end. Looks like a very basic mini projector setup.
 
I would be up for doing a set for you! I can do a basic mini H1/Mini D2S install for 100 bucks plus the cost of the kit. I would guess that the projectors and parts in the kit you gave us the link for will not be as high quality as The Retrofit Source's kits that I use.
 
I only know of one member here who is doing full FX-R retrofits for $$ and that is T4R member "Rickashay"

PM him if you want a quote for professional full (cutting and drilling like my thread) FX-R retrofit. He does really good work.

That is anywhere from 5 - 15 hours labor, maybe 20 if you are not skilled. My retrofit took a long time with all the testing.

I posted earlier that I would be willing to do a customized drop in kit for about $150 labor. This would include me opening up the light, very very minor cutting, no drilling required, cleaning, sanding, priming, painting the shroud and light assembly, installing the retrofit, and testing on a 4Runner.

The end result would be a light that looks 90-95% the same as the one in my retrofit thread, with slightly different output.

The thing is that drop in kits have gotten a lot better in recent years and they are now up to version 6 at the Retrofit Source.

I put the cost of a high quality drop in kit from TRS to be around $300 and a pair of TYC lights from EBAY to be about $80. $20 for paint and total parts = $400.

My labor cost would be $150 for the time it takes me to assemble and paint the retrofit. This part is non-negotiable.

Total would be $550 plus shipping, or you send me all the parts and paypal me $150.

Keep in mind you can sell your OEM lights for $100 each (maybe more) and recover part of the cost.
 
IF - you decide to do it yourself, I have a couple tips for you...

If you plan on keeping your reflector chrome, and not painting it, be VERY careful when cleaning or wiping dirt/prints off of it. The chrome "finish" comes off very easy; just by adding a bit pressure to a cloth while wiping it can take it off.

Another; the shrouds easily scratch.

And another; take your time. When they say measure 10 times and cut once, they mean it.

Other than that, its pretty easy and straight forward. I just finished my 1st retro last month and it was the FX-R w/TSX lens and etc....but if you decide to go for a smaller projector, like Mini H1 or even the new D2S 3.0, you barely cut. In fact, the D2S doesnt involve any cutting.

If you google the new D2S 3.0, theres a thread on hidplanet that compares light output and what the width of the FXR, Mini H1, and D2S 3.0 look like.


One last thing, read EVERY writeup you can find, this will help you have a "gameplan" on what you need to accomplish and how to do it without constantly going back to your computer. [MENTION=65101]BrianSD_42[/MENTION] and [MENTION=63060]rickashay[/MENTION] 's helped me A LOT. They have a lot of pictures and stick to detail.

I absolutely will NOT be doing an FX-R retrofit for ANY amount of money lol.

Labor for that type of retrofit is usually $350 - $500 (labor, not parts) based on many many posts I've seen.

I think what I'm going to do is put together a high end painted drop in kit like I mentioned above and sell it in the classified section. People are more willing to buy when they can see pictures of the completed job.

Hahaha! I agree, FX-R is a pretty PITA! I wish I knew E46 Shroud is the only shroud that didnt need any trimming to fit over it, would've been a much smoother process.

My Apollo shrouds fit over my fx-r's just fine with out any cutting...
 
blizz86 did my retrofit for me and they came out perfect. I purchased all the parts and sent them his way and I was happy with his work. By far one of the best mods I've ever done.
