HID upgrade, which one to go with?

I contacted support through email. They quickly responded and commented that it was a weird issue, and to maybe try testing the grounds. The grounds on the relay harness (common) could explain those fuses blowing, but the ground in the OE harness would have to also be faulty for the first light that blew a fuse (pre-relay harness install).

I’m going to experiment with the relay harness grounds, but I have a suspicion still that the cold temps are causing higher draw from the ballasts than claimed/expected. I’ll see if I can get a reading on that draw during startup somehow.

I’ll stop here to keep from polluting this thread, and will update if I come to any conclusions.

my guess is you've got a low voltage situation

Just found this post. Same exact issue I am having. XD support gave him this response:

“I believe with the colder tempatures the ballasts are required a bit more amperage on startup which is causing the 10amp fuse to blow. With that being said I recommend replacing them with a 15amp fuse and you should be good to go. The wiring and harnesses are rated at least a 15amp fuse so no worries there.”

I’ve asked for clarification on whether he means the OE wiring or XD relay harness wiring is up to the task for 15A fuses. I won’t blindly follow that response without further confirmation though. Going to keep my discussion in that thread going forward to consolidate the info. Thanks for your input thus far.

is a full refund an option for the XD kit?

Indeed colder temperatures do impact the ability for the ballasts to work as usual, since they have to produce such a high voltage to ignite the HID bulbs, the natural effect of extra cold temps reduces the capacitors ability to work as effectively (which help to produce that high output). Paired with the extra strain on your trucks electrical system to crank the engine when its half frozen, causing more voltage drop - these things can happen.

That said, if you are OK with manually turning the lights on as soon as the trucks engine is running for the winter months, you shouldnt have this issue.

The ballasts only pull a higher current (amps) when first turning on, so you can also change the fuse to a 15A and it wouldn't be much of a risk.

The Retrofit Source did indeed acquire XD, but as you can see, we're still here to support you guys with any questions, concerns, or warranty issues. Its...and at 6:20am EST at that! (FWIW, the TRS relay harnesses use 15A fuses as standard)

Cheers!

Thanks for the confirmation. Makes sense.

Can you tell me if the TRS relay harnesses use the same wire gauge as the XD harnesses (to support the 15A fuses you provide vs the 10A XD supplied as standard)?

-Greg

Blu - the TRS harness uses thicker gauge wire, but its a single harness for both sides of the truck (albeit still with independent relays). Both should work safely with a 15A though.

McCarey - we have the Philips capsule H11B bulbs back in stock now. They were out for a month+ even before the transition too. Becoming hard to get for sure!

sigh...

another set of TRS HIDs are failing. Same symptoms as set #1. One bulb is now out, the other is turning a green tint. They were 5500k. Purchased and installed in Nov 2017. First set was purchased Dec 2015 and failed in Nov 2017.

Looks like they last around 1.5 to 1.75 years. I have a 2015 Limited with only 42,000 miles. So it's not like I'm putting huge miles and always driving around in it. It's not even a daily driver as it's only used during day light for my wife to drop off and pick up my son from daycare.

Anyone able to get longer than 2 years out of their TRS HID kits?

Have few question folks ...

I have Morimoto XB fogs now and planning to purchase the Xenon Depot low beam HIDs. (H11).

- Will 4300 Phillips be a better color match to the currently installed Morimoto fogs or should I go with 5K bulb?
- XD 4300 Phillips bulbs are more expensive $45 each, should I expect more reliability from them and longer life span or you paying for the "brand" mostly?
- I am in BC Canada and we driving with the DRL on here, do I need to purchase any extra module for XH HIDs setup or not?
- R: the price / discount - I've just missed the July 4th sale and price is back top the regular $154.99. Does it mean there won't be any discount or promo on them until Boxing day or so?

:thanks:

Your Morimoto XB's are ----->>> COLOR: 5500K (Pure White)

I personally would go for 6000k. It would get you closer to those XBs. They are rated at 5500k. I'm afraid our 5000k will be a bit warmer.

You're getting reliability, longer life span, and brand with the Philip's. But they are rebased to H11.

You don't need a PWM module. Just the relay harness and that would work!

PM me and I'll see what I can do with your discount!

Thanks!

Oh, great! Thank you! Is there a H11 HID kit with 6000K? Or only 5000K and the next one is 6500k?

I'm in the same boat with you except I have the Xenondepot Extreme Kit. I have had 3 ballasts and two bulbs that they sent me to resolve a problem on the driver's side and it still fails to ignight or just goes out while driving intermittently. The relay kit made no difference. XD tried to help but after three failed replacements and hours of frustration from me they are refusing a refund. Its just plain unacceptable customer service. It seems the kit is not compatible with 2017 4Runners.

Were you ever able to resolve this issue?

Did XeonDepot resolve your issues?

Just wanted to chime in on my headlight experience-

I went with Xenon Depot Xtreme HID kit for low beams. I went with the 4300k Phillips bulbs just because I know they are higher quality bulbs, but in retrospect I wish I would have gone 5500k (or even 6000k if that was an option). I'm not sure about 6500k but I don't like anything that starts to tint blue at all. I had 5500/6000k HID's in my 4th gen 4runner and it was so much whiter and crisper. It made the truck look and feel much newer than a 2008.

The 4300k Phillips bulbs look like a bright halogen headlight. They are NOT pure white, but have a definite light yellow tint to them. They are probably best if all you want is function and don't care about the look or styling of your headlight/4runner. They light up the road wonderfully and I have no complaints about function. However, if you want the truck to look like a 2020 vehicle, I recommend going with a higher Kelvin rating.

I also installed LASfit front signal switchbacks. These are in the 5500k range so they're much crisper than the Philips HID's that are on right next to them. The mismatch is slightly bothersome (to me) and making me want to switch my HID bulbs. FYI the switchbacks look great running with the XD LED Xtreme Pro 9005 DRL's.

Hope this helps anyone.

I ordered a set of Morimoto HIDs with Philips 4800k bulbs as I like a slightly warm white. The SV4 LED bulbs I have currently are a bit too blue and get washed too easy by every other light on the road.

I decided to try the Morimoto Elite 35w 4500k. With all the poor CS reviews from the big name vendors, I just searched the web for the cheapest deal. I ended up with $128.25 to my door.

If I experience problems I'll likely replace parts with OEM stuff as needed.

Hey does anyone know how to get into contact with Xenon Depot customer service? I ordered their HID kit with phillips bulbs, a fog light kit and some interior LEDS and was told after a week some of my order was backordered. I emailed back asking if I could just order only the items in stock and I haven't received any reply. This all happened about 3weeks ago and they already charged my card but haven't sent anything. I've been calling and emailing but have not received any response.
