That compartment is where I keep my Insurance Card & registration. I get this call, one day from my wife, who has been pulled over for speeding. She yells at me because she cannot find the cards and states that the Trouper has threatened to have the T4R towed if she does not produce the documents. I tell her, over the Cell phone, to look in the secret glove box compartment for these. In a very load voice she yells "WHAT SECRET COMPARTMENT".

I am sure you heard all about this when you got home later. I have a tough question for you, if the wife was stranded but the 4Runner was towed to a lot, which one do you rescue first??

The little feature I was not aware about was that little hamburger/french fry tray that folds out. It comes in handy when you are hungry on the road. You don't even have to take your eyes off of the road to eat!!

Hidden Snot Prevention Features!

It was only last week that I discovered the pull-out tray in the pull down rear seat armrest/cupholder unit. I was pulling out the cup holder unit a little harder than usual, and sure enough, there was the tray. I've used that fold down cup holder almost daily (I take my lunch breaks in my 4R and listen to the radio while eating lunch in the back seat), and here I discover the tray almost a year after I got the 4R.

That tray fits one of those small kleenex boxes nicely for the rear seat passengers.

As far as hidden features that some people might not be aware of, how about the spot for the kleenex box under the center-armrest. Some people might not know about the trash bag holder that is located on the bottom rear portion of the center console.

Here is a dumb one... heck I didn't know what they were for!

For those of us without the double-decker cargo shelf, the little hooks on the wheel wells in the back were designed so that you could hook plastic grocery bags onto them! I have the cargo net so I just dump them in there.


Anyone find a good use for those little cubby holes on top of the wheel wells?

I've put bungie cords in them. If I need to hold down something in the trunk area I have easy access to bungie cords. I also have the various nets but they can be an annoyance sometimes.

How many of you know that the passenger side seat folds flat if you remove the headrest and scoot the seat up a bit-then back? It makes for a nice (but not totally flat) bed using the base of the back seat.

I showed my wife when she was driving (yes I let her drive once) and she said "nice...now go to sleep so you'll stop telling me how to drive".

Love is grand.

I leave some plastic bags there just in case it rains and I am carrying my computer bag with me. I also leave a few extra towels in there and my pocket tire pressure gauge.

I stock the little cubbyholes, on the rear on top of the wheel wells, with AA batteries. Since I have two kids, their portable stereos and hand held games thingies require more batteries than my parents have purchased in their entire life time. Even my Rockem-Sockem Robots didn

It's too bad that the salesman didn't, or didn't know how to, show you all these little things before you bought the vehicle, huh? He should've shown you these things while you were comparing vehicles...all other things being equal, they add up and might just tip the scale his way.

Honestly, I've tried, and it is HARD to get through all the features in a new 4Runner in a reasonable time. Heck, for people that are totally unfamiliar with the 4R, you can easily eat up a 1/2 hour just explaining all the aspects/modes/features of the 4wd system if you want!

Although it did take me a few months of owning my 03 to figure out that the extra little compartment in the glove box opens and closes hehe

Well, you seem to have missed that besides that sliding sun visor there's an additional one, so you can cover your left side and the front simultaneously.

Yesterday I'm driving along with the sun coming in the car from the driver's window. So I pull the sun visor across to block the sun. Of course the sun is entering just past the end of the visor. So, I was wondering why they didn't have those little slide out extensions to provide more shade protection. I get home and while putting the visor back into the tucked-up position I notice the little eye lock doesn't line up (it's about an inch off). I push the visor back into position and pop it into the parked position. I'm thinking to myself "Shit I'm gonna have to have the stealer replace the visor, what a pain in the ass". As I'm walking up the stairs it dawned on me that Toyota would not let a defective visor slip through like that, maybe it is supposed slid to give better shade coverage. Sure enough both visors slide about 8" to provide shade all the way to the middle pillar. I figure I better post this because I

I knew about the additional visor, just not how it extends.

The "feature" that I did not know about and discovered here was that you can close the rear window by turning the key in the lock on the rear hatch (you can open it from the remote but you cannot close it that way for safety reasons).

Why is it a safety issue that you can't close the rear window by the remote? Can't they put a safety stop in it, like they have for automatic front windows that close?

Close Rear Window By Remote

I read on some website that you can close the rear window using the remote if you just keep holding down the "Lock" button on the remote. Is that not true? (Don't have my 4Runner yet so I can't try it out)

That is not true. I had never heard that so i tried it. Doesnt do anything.
