High Beam Adjustment Question

Can the high beams be adjusted separately from the low beams? (2011 SR5)

My driver side high beam is about 1 foot too high at 15 feet. Lights up the roof top of the neighbors house directly across the street.
Really only good for squirrel hunting right now.

The answer is "no" - the LB and HB sit in the same headlight assembly.

But, "too high" compared to what? You imply it's too high relative to the low beam ... but that's not possible unless your headlight is damaged - OR, you've swapped bulbs and gotten one improperly installed.

Or "too high" relative to the PS high beam?

Have you been changing bulbs, or otherwise "working" on them?

That's what I was thinking, Brian! Check to see if its sitting flat and level in the housing. If the low beams are correct, there has to be something wrong with that bulb.

These are housings I bought that had been modified with HIDs.

The bulb is set correctly. I have popped it out and in multiple times in an attempt to seat it differently.

I really like the output of the HIDs. So much better. But in the pic, you can see the driver side high beam in relation to the passenger side. The passenger side is the dimmer one in the middle.

It is too high in comparison to the passenger side and for general usefulness. Unless I am in a hilly area, the high beams do little for lighting the road.

I will look into what is involved in adjusting the HIDs and go from there.

Thanks for the responses.

Your picture reveals that the DS headlight is aimed too high.

The two LB cutoffs should be on top of one another, not as pictured, where the DS LB cutoff is higher than the PS cutoff.

Do you know how to adjust the headlight up/down?

ETA: The pic also reveals that your DS projector is rotated a bit CCW, as the cutoff runs 'uphill' to the right. Both cutoffs s/b parallel, but I think once you lower the DS headlight, this will not be very noticeable.

Further, your DS HB looks to be dramatically brighter than the PS HB. Are they the same bulbs?

This is what the LBs should look like, although this was taken at a time when I intentionally had my PS headlight set a tad high. Note how level the cutoffs are.

What projectors are you using?

could it be that the HID bulb was damaged and not sitting in the housing correctly? To me, it looks like the lb (hid) bulbs are pretty close (left being a bit higher than the right in your 2nd pic and definitely a slight bit of rotation there), but the high beams (the halogen lamps) are completely off!

Are these new housings or just HID bulbs inserted into the stock housing?

I think you adjusted for low beams, but the lamps weren't inserted correctly and now the high beams are knocked out of alignment.

Or...

The housing is either damaged or not built correctly. Speaking of which, when did you go HID?

Call me sometime when you're not working, dammit! :argue:

These pictures are more accurate as I wasn't on level ground in the other pics.

The High Beam bulbs are what were in the Toy already. One may have been replaced at some point. I will probably get some new ones that are a little closer in color to the HIDs.

I think my Toy may have been damaged in the front at one point. I find more and more indications of that. So that may be a little of the issue.

Bulbs are Morimoto 3Five 5000K D2S. When I referred to adjusting the HIDs, I figured it would involve disassembling and adjusting the projectors. Just don't know what is involved in that.

I think I know how to adjust them. I will confirm on the stock ones but it looks like there is a Phillips screw to turn on the back.

I just installed them last weekend. The light output of the stock units just sucks. These HIDs are so much better. I guess if I really need light, I can flip on the light bar :hurt:

.

I wouldn't do that. You'd have to bake open the headlight halves, and then the projector is most certainly cemented in place. Those look like good projectors, you'd be asking for trouble.

Yup. I think if you lower that left one you'll be fine. The rotation is not that far off.

you need to sell it and buy a TRD Pro

looks to me, just like philsey said; lower your DS a bit and you should be good to go

Semantics maybe, but you adjust the whole headlight assy, not the individual LB or HB. And you have only up/down, nothing else.

Hey Phil, your pdf files for adjustment is awesome! And its confirmed on page 5 that there are both horizontal and vertical adjustments-at least for the stock housings!

I'll be damned! 5 years of LOTS of dinking around with my headlights, and I never knew that horiz. adj. exists. Ha! Thanks Chris.

Now if it only had rotational adjustments. :bowl:
Thanks for the input everyone. Hopefully I can get these straightened out, have functional headlights and not blind any more drivers.

So I gotta ask, where'd you get these housings from? Are they one-offs or bought from a company? New or used?

It sure sounds like someone custom-built the projector inserts into the stock housing, and when they did, they didn't get it lined up correctly in relation to the stock high-beam. I hope I'm wrong about it though! Hope you say that there was something stuck on the lip of the high beam's housing which caused the bulb to be inserted crooked or something!

Not sure about other years, but the 2011 does not have the horizontal adjustment. This is where it should be.
