High clearance fuel tank?

Just thinking out loud here...I've kissed the rocks a couple times with my fuel tank skid and can't help but notice how low it hangs on our trucks. It seems like the 3rd gens, in particular, have more clearance under the fuel tank. Is there anyone that produces a tank with a thinner profile that would tuck up higher? Any thoughts on the possibility of a 3rd gen tank "transplant"?

I bet all the sensors and such would give anybody a headache trying to do it. However, where there is enough money, time and patience, you could do almost anything. Probably would just limit the amount of fuel you could carry. My guess is the shape had do do with the spare size and all the other items that run in/around that spot. I'd love to get mine higher and have quite a few scrapes/bangs on my skid too. My exhaust is a bit kissed as well... I figure when I do enough damage, I'll put a smaller exhaust in mine.

Changing the fuel tank may be an extreme move, maybe look at an aftermarket fuel tank skid plate by ARB, Budbilt, Schrockworks etc.

FJ fuel tanks are notched up front for better breakover clearance. It should be a direct fit and I think you'll lose about 4 gallons in fuel capacity.
