High "sticky" Idle Problem

So recently in my '87 22RE the idle is sticking to high. This only happens if Im cruzin in heavy traffic around 15-35 mph around 1500rpms. When I put in the clutch and pop it in N and coast the engine idle sticks at around 1200-1500rpms. Only way to get it back to 750rpms (normal) is very quickly and lightly rev the engine while in N. Any Ideas? I recently just replaced the air intake tub and all of the vacum hoses. But it was actually doing this prior to that. Thanks!!!

Your throttle valve is sticking either due to your dashpot setting, throttle cable sticking or throttle return spring worn out or missing. One other thing I have noticed is if there is side to side play on the throttle valve shaft it will get out of center and stick to the side of the throttle body and your next tap on the accelerator usually centers it. One other thing to check is if there is an abundance of black goo in your throttle body that is sticking to the valve.

I agree with "TurboSR5" my 4Runner had the same problem, my throttle butterfly shaft is warn, and the the spring is weak, so I went to my local Autozone and picked up some universal fit GM throttle return springs and hooked one of them up, and it helped pull my throttle body closed. Also clean out the gunk that builds up around the throttle body butterfly. I also did the same thing to my 1994 Hilux 22RE. It's a super cheap fix.

I went to my local Autozone and picked up some universal fit GM throttle return springs and hooked one of them up, and it helped pull my throttle body closed.

Do you recall the length to which you trimmed the spring?
