I remember seeing a thread a loooong time ago where someone took the hitch, cut off the ends, and welded into the frame rails. I've searched all night but can't seem to find that post. Can someone please refer a link, or perhaps links to others who may have done something similar? Thanks in advance.

Great! Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for. Since I'm on a budget, and was removing the bumper to do some repairs anyways; I thought I'd fix up my rusted through frame rails (where the hitch was previously bolted on), and modify the hitch at the same time. Thanks again, for all your help!

Clearance! If you check out the thread that was linked above, you'll see that the hitch looks a lot better too. I'm considering doing it myself.

Thanks for posting that link. This is something that's been in the back of my mind. I'm planning on building a rear bumper, raising and integrating the hitch is part of the plan. Like you guys said, it's too low.

I believe that the method in the above link probably won't fit the spare tire in it's original location.
Here is another thread that might spark some ideas. You could do this mod to move the hitch up (no welding required), then just trim the OEM bumper to clear it.
