Hood scoop?

The wife and I will be taking the 4runner for a test drive this weekend and in less there is a huge surprise we’ll probably pick one up. I really like the look of the Trail but just can’t seem to get past the look of the hood scoop. Perhaps it’s something that would grow on me over time. So I was wondering how you guys feel about the hood scoop?
Thanks,
Joel

If i could change three things on my LE, it would be:

TE Hood Scoop
TE Door Handles
& TE Wheels

I love the look of the TE. I would have bought one but my wife wanted the LE, so that was my compromise.

I don't have any experience with the 4runner scoop, but the only thing the scoop on the Tacoma was good for was reflecting sunlight directly into your eyes, it was horrible.

The scoop seems to be very polarizing. It will be NO problem swapping hoods with someone on this forum that doesn't have a scoop if you decide you don't like it.

How do I know? That's how I got mine! http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/92013-antmans-thread-29.html#post1136849

I have had no problems with my hood scoop, no glare from sun, etc. Actually, I like it. One thing I have noticed at higherish speeds is some flexing in the hood. I have to wonder if I would see this without the scoop, or maybe if my truck wasnt black.

I have a TE and am not a fan of the fake hood scoop. It is not functional and, consequently, should not be there. Reminds me of the fake hood scoops on Trans Ams. It makes often wonder if I should grow a mullet to go along with the Trans Am look.

I wish my limited had the hood scoop, nothing about the 5th gen 4runner is understated to begin with and I think it looks cool!

Got this pic from the 2013 4Runner brochure.

FWIW- I still like the scoop!

I like the hood scoop. Goes well with my mud terrain. Then again, I'm not very practical. I just like to have fun.

I like the scoop. It's just the cherry on top for the TE. As already mentioned, the hood flexes and the glare off of the scoop can be annoying, but I still like the look.

Everyone has different views on the hood scoop and life in general. Got a compliment just the other day about my TE from this ole geezer and he called it "radical."

If you havin' scoop problems I feel bad for you son..I got 99 problems but a hood scoop ain't one :pimp:

I've never had a chance to dig around a TE before. Would you be able to cut out the center plastic part of the hood scoop and direct the air into the engine bay or is it just a scoop molded to a regualr hood? I know cutting it would gain no performance enhancements but it could reduce a bit of the drag or pressure that may be making the hood "flex". Just a thought/question from an aviator that beats the air into sumbmission on a regular basis...

We unnofficially diagnosed hood flex here on T4R as being caused by:

A- Air getting under the hood at speeds due to a larger than average gap on the leading edge of the hood, where it meets the grill.

B- Poorly balanced tires.

C- Thin sheetmetal.

Letting more air in would probably make it worse.

I like the look of the hood scoop. Don't have one on my SR5 and don't really miss having one.
Besides I have one on my 66 Mustang that really works :)

IMO, I think the hood scoop makes the truck look alot more aggressive. Without it (stock), it just looks like a soccer mom vehicle. As for the TE, I think the fender flares, the smoked headlights and tails, the rack, rims, and of course the hood, add alot to the attitude of the truck.

Either way, it's personal opinion if you like the hood scoop. I, like many others, love it. I got one on my 4th gen SR5 because it looks so much better. :thumb3:
