Hood Scoops

In other countries, the 4Runner gets a Turbo Diesel engine and the hood scoop becomes functional. The hood scoop directs air on the top mount intercooler, very much like the hood scoops on the Celica Alltracs...

The sound absorbing material under the hood is cut away from the scoop area, thus indicating that there is a use for the scoop provided for. I'll have to look at the UK diesel Land Cruiser photos to see the intercooler.

If I ever saw the temp rise during hard use in the summer, I might be inclined to cut out the backing from the scoop. Until then I am just going to enjoy the look of the non-functioning scoop. In reality there is plenty of area for the radiator to flow air, making anything the scoop might offer useless.

Yes we do get "Liquid Sunshine" up here quite a bit, after all it's Pacific Northwest. As for drilling holes on the plastic cover on the scoop. well....... I would think the plastic cover is bolted on to the scoops or something, I do not have the scoops but I think it would be good to remove it when it is warm and no rain.

Also I saw someone's idea was to remove the whole hood assembly completly. Not on a 4Runner though..... I should have taken a pic of it.

after reading alot of the posts, ( good comments btw) i think it wouldnt be a bad idea to take out the plastic "cove" and put up some sort of custom grill or filter, not for alot of air intake, but for some to get a little more air circulation going in the engine. But for the raining months, i think sealing it off would be fine.

Living in the heat of the desert my whole life, i bet the engine might not mind a little added ventalation.



Or if you want to get really creative, you could make a valve that you could operate inside the truck, that opens / closes the hood scoop... ( would be a fun project, even though there isnt much gain.)

You could also make a remote controlled cover operator so all u need to do is press the controller button, and Walla....... It's Open sesame.

HOOD SCOOP

Hey,
i got the hood scoop, and cut out the plastic cup behind the screen, for you guys thinking that to much dirt, rain and mud would get in the engine, i got a question for you,,,, do you have the hood scoop with the cut-out ?????? i do, it dont make it any dirtier, any more water or mud, than before, im going on a year with it cut-out, all it really does is allow a little more air into the engine bay, oh,, yes, its a 4X4 and i do go wheeling in mine,
so i say, if you want to cut out the plastic cup, DO IT, ITS "NOT" going to hurt a thing.

Somebody on the forums does have the scoop with lights in it.

When I got my hoodscoop put on recently, the shop had to order a piece that they forgot, and they had to paint it. So I drove about 15 or 20 miles(I don't really know how far the shop is) on the interstate with no grill at all in the scoop, it was just a hole in my hood.

Didn't really notice any performance gains.

I was just thinking this. Something like vertical blinds on windows where you push a button and they rotate open. Hit the button again and they rotate closed. Tre-slick.

Has anyone done the deckplate mod lateley?

What's the result? More horses? Better Gas mileage?

lol you guys are worry abot water getten into your bay? I dont think the water will have a chance to run before the heat dry it up! I'm too are thinking about just takeing the plastic piece that cover it out..:beer:
