Hood (w/scoop) solar panel measurements

Ok, finally had time to do the install.

Decided to complicate matters a bit by installing the controller in the back vs under the hood. As someone mentioned, I didn’t want to have over heating issues and to be able to plug the panels into my Jackery 240 power station while driving.

Wired the panels in series, decided to use Gorilla double sided tape under the panels vs 3m spray adhesive which was my original idea (too messy). Also, used Gorilla tape on the edges outside which was probably not necessary.

Dragged the wires through driver side hole in firewall and under front and rear door sills.

Heading into the mountains for a cpl days, will report back.

hows the solar panel work for hood glare? i get hood glare right now and was wondering if the solar panel cuts that?

Does anyone know some ballpark figure of what I could expect for output for a roof mounted solar panel, being roof width, and fits unobtrusively between the sunroof and allowing clearance for the rear hatch?

I'm usually around 60W when it's sunny, ideally i'd make a mount that can tilt when parked but I have mine slightly recesses so I can still use the rack to ladders or lumber or whatever when I need to.

I very rarely if at all had issues with glare so can’t really say personally but I guess it cuts down on it (in theory), def didn’t make it any worse.

It’s all about timing. This literally just became available. This is the first set up/install and test on a “scooped” hood.

How did you install it... I have a 1/2" thick blob on the backside or my middle panel...

Same, I forget the reason now why it’s not the same neat little black box as the side panels. I added some squishy foam from Home Depot (the type you use to insulate doors and windows) around the “blob” and it works out. Hope that helps.

looks like production samples, being the only panel that doesnt say lensun on the panel itself..

I would have to dig for the convo in my inbox about that, again, I forget the reason. My foam solution works well and by no means impacts the look (imho) or performance of the panel.

Btw, the kit is live and avail on their site. FYI, I suggested they might want to include some basic wiring instructions even though it’s fairly straight forward.

they are good with shipping, i ordered from the site on july 5th i believe.
The main gripe i have is that the panel itself is 3mm thick? i believe, the bulge i have is 10mm thick, i have 13mm now.. something like 5mm blob i would be ok with. 10mm is a lot of gap to fill.

I emailed the company last night about the gigantic silastic blob and they quoted your message to me as the fix. Not impressed with this company so far. I might just skip the center panel and go with the side panels when I install these.

I got the same reply from them. It can work, but it is unacceptable for a new product.. to tell a customer this is a work around.. There is no real reason for the blob, asides from it being more work to manufacture a proper one. there is no reason why its acceptable to have the boxes on the side panels but not the mid panel.

Maybe my “blob” was smaller? Either way, I was bummed as well and agree it’s not a good way to go. Already emailed them reiterating this concern!

It’s getting addressed moving forward. If you already have yours they will work with you direct on a solution. I stand by my opinion that they are easy to work with, they redesigned this in less then six hours (size of panel was the original issue, new panels will be tiny bit smaller. Same wattage).
