hot shot starter relay

has anyone either bought or made your own hot shot starter relay to bypass the ignition switch and send more current to the starter solenoid to fix intermittent starter issues?

did your 22RE engine already have a factory starter relay in place? and if so, then did you bypass that with your new hot shot starter relay?

I bought one from Painless Performance and, yes, my 87 22re has the factory starter relay. It comes with instructions and all the wiring you need to complete the bypass.

Back in the decade of big hair bands, when it seemed like ALL Toyotas had hot start issues, I used to make them all the time.

I'd take a Ford Solenoid(yes that is what we called them), meaning a good quality momentary solenoid. Don't just use a $12 piece of junk! Anyway I'd run 8g wire from the battery and to the starter, and trigger it from the ignition switch.

But you must know, I did it to make money off people who had already spent money elsewhere and hadn't fixed their problem. The reality is if all your cables and connections are good(don't ignore grounds), and your starter and battery are good, you shouldn't need it. And yet Samurai owners had similar issues I think.

Since this is posted in the 3G forum, I've never heard of anyone doing this to a third-gen. The Denso factory starter is more or less bullet-proof, except for the solenoid contacts which start to die around 140k, and those are easily renewed (once you get your hands on the starter.) Changing the contacts always seems to fix the problem.

I made one for my 22re, but I didn't know anybody did this to the 3rd gen either.

Hrt4me, next time you have trouble, leave the key on and jump the positive battery stud straight to the solenoid contact on the starter. If that works, you know the trouble is in the ignition or factory relay.

I actually pulled the starter out of my 3rd Gen '96 SR5 yesterday, cleaned the inner housing and replaced both contacts and plunger, and so now I hope my intermittent starter problems are a thing of the past...
