How can I make my 4th Gen T4R sound like an FJ exhaust wise?

I'm baby sitting my buddies FJ while he is on a cruise this week and driving it around town.....WOW. The thing sounds great from the exhaust, good throat to it when accelerating, no real drone at continuous speed, it's perfect.

Do they use an entirely different setup on the FJ than they do the 4Runner? Is their muffler an entirely different piece that I should go junkyarding for?

Its probably a completely different exhaust. The 4R although capable is more refined than the FJ and thus the engineers thought that a quiet exhaust was more appropriate.

Its prolly just a different muffler that is a direct bolt on for the 4R.

IIRC the big difference is the rear resonator (little muffler lookin' thing behind the axle). A few guys have removed them and gained minimal noise with a bit more throaty... Very FJC like IMHO.

I noticed the resonator, but from the posts I recalled and read here, the resonator made minimal difference. I'm of the thought that the mufflers are totally different beasts. I'm going to hop under both Toyo's this week and see if I can visually determine a difference.

Ok, the super cool parts guide has been semi-taken down (illustrations removed). If I did it correctly the pipe section that contains the main T4R muffler has the same part# as the FJC. I think the $1170.34 exhaust component is the one...

Wow, good find.

Interesting, so that would make us think the mufflers are the same. I'll still get under the two vehicles and see if there are any distinguishing marks on the mufflers that we can use to identify.

I got under there the best I could tonight (pavement is soaked and muddy from rain and fog) and from the eyeball test, the FJ muffler looks CONSIDERABLY shorter than the 4Runner muffler. More inspection to come as the ground cleans up this week.

I'm nearly positive the OEM mufflers are different sizes, with the FJ being shorter.

The illustrations look the same, but the price of the two units is different.

Yet more evidence from FJCruiserforums...this guy and I are opposites, he wants his FJ quieter so he was exploring a t4r muffler....

I had a chance to look around under a 2008 V6 4Runner and did see two interesting differences compared to the FJ. #1, the muffler is exact same oval diameter, but is 6 inches longer. Even the output pipe attach and front hanger bracket look the same. #2, there's a football sized/shaped object between the muffler and the exit of the tailpipe... Is this the resonator? It looked to be built into the pipe itself, not a bolted-on type of piece.

Finding wrecked FJ's is turning out to be tougher than expected at the local junkyards.

I'll probably just go an easy route and get the Gibson muffler (788500) that they throw on the cat back and turn the rear tip out the side.....

Any local muffler shop could do this in a lunch break.

a flowmaster 40 series muffler might be a better sound for you. its loud & throaty. you can hear them here. Flowmaster, Inc The Muffler and Exhaust Technology Company manufacturer of performance exhaust systems, mufflers, exhaust kits

I'm not a fan of the Flowmaster sound...it's over done.

Also, the 40 is about the loudest they make now, if I had to go Flowmaster I'd probably end up with a 70 series.

:iagree: ive had them on other vec.s & they were loud. i just assume by your op that the 4runners sound was to quiet & you wanted the louder ,throaty sound, didnt realize you wanted quiet, my bad i guess.
