I have had a Ram-o-can and I liked it. BUT pulling the trim below the HVAC and mounting a diamond ball on the fan control side, love it. I have had it going on two years, I use it every time I get in the car, it is holding up well.
I will say since that piece of trim is friction fit, I would be leery of clamping anything bigger than say an iPad Mini without reinforcing the trims attachment.

So a couple of things, but they added a Ram-O-Can 'Stubby' which is like half the height. This fits the cupholders in the 4runner much better, and wobbles around a lot less. I swapped to that and couldn't be happier for mounting my iPhone.
The one thing I do disagree with is that vertical trim not being strong enough. I have an iPad Air (10" tablet) mounted to that piece and despite using a LONG RAM arm + double ball connector + SHORT RAM arm, it actually wobbles a huge amount LESS than the iphone in an X-grip. That trim piece is meant to PULL outwards easily, but it takes vertical and side to side stresses pretty damn well.
When I installed mine I used a zinc mending plate (you can get these at any hardware store) and matched the hole pattern on the diamond RAM mount, then used 3M foam 30lb double stick tape so that the mending bracket's edges wouldn't dig into the plastic since it's a curved piece.
Seriously that fullsize ipad, in a lifeproof NUUD case, plus cradle, aint going anywhere.
Now the biggest issue is that if you have someone in the passenger seat you'll have to futz with getting the angle and the height right on the positioning so you don't make it impossible for them to sit in the truck.

Yeah I too backed mine out with a trimmed piece of 18ga aluminum and used VHB to tack the ball to the trim, then drill and bolted.
Maybe mine had been pulled off at the dealer for whatever reason, it is just not as confidently snug as I'd like it. Come to think of it maybe I'll pull it back off and spread the friction clips apart a bit more. Thanks for the idea
oh BTW an iPad air is only 4.875 oz heavier than a mini 
: not the same as an older iPad2 which is about 6.208 oz heavier lol tanking in at 1.35 pounds vs. 0.95. 
I trust your eval of it, thanks for the feedback, as I know you have bounced around more than, I dare say myself, in your truck :madgrin:
My biggest complaint with the Ram-o-can was, that without the cupholder liner it would rotate and with the cupholder liner it still rotate just less (even when you would spin it to lock it in place)
I might check that stubby out too. Have you tried a full size iPad with one? I was considering (only in thought at this point) in trying to reuse mine in the passenger cupholder for the passenger to nav/surf/reconnoiter/ect. from.

I've pulled mine off about a dozen times and it's still as strong a lockup as it was the first time i pried it off. I'd say just replace those yellow clips to be safe.
It's not the weight but the size of the ipad that's the issue, as you have to use longer components to push it out far enough to clear the transfer lever, and A/C controls.
You can solve the turning in the RAM-O-Cans by simply putting some velcro on the bottom of the cupholder.

Somewhat in topic question ...
I have a ram suction cup mount with x-grip and Samsung S7 on the driver side next to the A pillarar. I noticed the Air Bag badge on the A pillar.
If that air bag was to deploy, would my mount and cell phone become a projectile?

This mounting position works to secure a few different things, depending on the situation:
- My HAM HT,
- My phone (with the small x-mount)
- My Tablet (either with the large x-mount or the custom 7" tablet mount shown in the pics).
This way it is out of my line of sight to the road and the only thing it blocks is the temp knob, and I can reach around to get to that if need be.
Very solid, and minimal shake, and satellite acquisition is just as good as if mounted to the windshield.
The mounting ball is secured with 1/2" sheet metal screws that tapped into small drill holes I made in the plastic of the dash. There was nothing directly behind the plastic, so I was not afraid of damaging anything.

Based on the feedback from most EMTs, mounting stuff on the windshield near the pillars is usually less than advisable judging by injury reports.
Personal interjection, but I try to keep as much OUT of my eyeline when driving as I can. My Delorme, which is mounted to the windshield, has it's screen turned off (it's barely like 1.5" by 1.5", tiny anyways) and I use the ipad to control it's function (it's basically a satellite transceiver).

Not based on any scientific research but I will second LawnDart regarding placing objects near the A pillar. To me the convenience isn't worth the risk.

This is a great way to hold the iPad II and my iPhone6. I'm going to get one of these really soon.
Is there a topographic ap or download people are using for the iPad II? I'm not running a cell connection on the iPad so I'd be looking for a downloadable map. I'd like to find my way in places like Mojave Reserve and Carrizo Plain, CA.

That's a great, inexpensive mount. I thought with that name, Gaia = Mother Earth, it might be a topo map application for the iPad II.
I need to be able to access the phone at a lower point in the car.
The trouble with windshield mounts, in California at least, is that if you touch the phone while driving you can get a ticket. Now you can't even have it in your hands. I'm pretty sure that would apply to using the touch pad.
The T4R phone won't let you dial while your moving. The work around is to dial using your phone when the traffic allows or you come to a stop briefly in traffic.
I think the low mount cup holder or flex arm puts the device down low where you can see it and dial when traffic is light and you need to use the phone.
Nothing annoys me more than to see someone texting while they drive LA freeways.

Ram Mounts! Sturdy enough for offroad. Removable. Doesn’t interfere with passenger.

Its actually three different pieces. The Ball Mount, Extension and X Grip.
Did the very same in my F250. There I used: RAM Mounts RAM-202U-24 Rectangle Base with 1.5" Ball, RAP-BC-201U-6 Double Socket Arm & RAM-HOL-UN8BU X-Grip so the 4Runner I think was about the same. But double check my build thread to be sure.
do you know how quickly an airbag gets deployed?
