how do I acquire new 6112 springs only

:help: I tried to assemble my 6112 coil overs today using a new vise mounted spring compressor I purchased. I was able to get one coil over put together with some struggle. I almost killed myself trying to assemble the 2nd one. The spring compressor arms bent and the spring shot out like a missile. Luckily It didn't hit me thanks to the safety measures. Unfortunately my brand new spring is scraped down to the bare metal in spots and generally chewed up.

Is it possible to just get a replacement spring?

Do I really need to worry about bare metal exposed springs?

This may not preclude me from attempting to replace the spring anyways but just curious. This for a brand new 2019 4runner and I don't like to half ass anything.

The springs have some kind of rubberized coating on them. I'm not sure paint would stick?

I thought about getting them re coated or maybe powder coated.

My main concern is salty winter roads and rust.

Bilstein currently will not provide just the 6112 shock or just the 6112 spring to my knowledge.
You may get lucky and contact 858-386-5951 with your spring part number... I make no guarantees!

I agree with [MENTION=303056]Bayou_Pro[/MENTION], clean them up and shoot a few layes of quality paint on them and call it done! You and the spring will be ok.

I used Powerbuilt Strut Tool and Strut Coil Compressor Kit - 641429.
It's rated for 400 pounds so I thought it would be ok if I compressed enough coils slightly rather than fewer coils severely. My compressor began to bend and I couldn't get is loosened before it shot the spring out. The safety wires they provided did the trick but destroyed themselves in the process.

This was just my experience, I hate to tell folks not to use them.
Just be careful and USE THE SAFTY WIRES.

If you took a razor to the paint (which I don't recommend anyone do) you will see what I'm talking about. Maybe rubberized is the wrong word but it's almost has a plastic characteristic. The coating can take a beating which is why it's impressive that my coils are bare in spots.

Looking at mine right now and they are simply powder coated. They have a slick feel to them, definitely nothing rubberized.

I believe you, and that makes sense. I've never seen powder coating peeled off a spring before. The peelings really look and feels like plastic.

That begs the question - what paint sticks to powder coating?

Problem solved, I found a new set of springs on eBay!
Now I just need to take them to a qualified shop for assembly.
I'm done trying to do that myself!

Depends on the climate you live. Rust is usually what cause spring breakage.

That was my major concern, I really screwed the coating up on the springs.
My 2010 Tacoma's frame was replaced due to rust so I am highly sensitive to corrosion prevention. They would rust here for sure.

I'm sure that would work just fine. I want to keep my factory coil over set intact. I purchased new "top hats" so I don't have to tear them apart.
