How do I remove my spare tire?

I wanted to lower the spare to check the tire that was mounted to it (since I bought it used) and had a really hard time getting it down. I would feel it catch but had to apply a TON of pressure into it while turning or it would slip out. I'm sure mine is either rounded or has enough crap in there to not allow it to fully sit.

I honestly felt like an idiot while trying to do this b/c it took me a solid 30 min to drop it....

Yeah I felt like a total idiot as well. I guess I will give it another try haha. Mine is exactly as described in this thread, it feels like its just spinning and not grabbing onto anything. Thanks guys.

I check my spare tire pressure every year and at the same time, I give the cable a good lube job.

My neighbor have a 06 4Runner and not able to get the spare tie down, I helped him by using a large pry bar prying on the spare while hes turning it which requires tons of effort, finally got it down and there is nothing but rust on the cable. Lube the hell out of it and up and down a million times and got much better-but is not smooth like mine no matter what.

Gonna bump this with a little modification to the question:

I'll paint the scene. It's a saturday night and I stayed in to study. A couple of friends asked me for a late DD at 3am. I said sure bc I was gonna grab some food too. I come outside to a miserable downpour, and think "well this isn't going to be fun.". So I go pick them up, grab food, and drop them off. On the way back to my house, there's some construction on the road and I swerved to miss a pot hole. I hear a LOUD pop and think "oh no"..... I ride it out back to my house. I get out on to hear that "sweet sweet" hiss of air leaking out the front driver side tire. It sucks but s*** happens. I've never had to use my spare before so I check the manual. I'm able to jack up the wheel (I have an OME lift and with the stock jack, was able to BARELY get it off the ground, I'm talking centimeters!) so then I go back to my tool bag, I see I'm missing the factory lug-nut tool... Luckily I have a 4-way with me. So I go to lower my spare, I'm turning and turning and turning (after I spent some time making sure it the tool caught and the spare was actually lowering). Next thing I know, I can't turn anymore. I look under and My spare is hanging, just barely above the ground, and I can't lower it anymore!! Any ideas how to get my spare out? I'll probably take my dead wheel off in the morning and get a new tire on it, not needing my spare. However, I still should be able to get my spare off, what if I was on the side of the road? Anyone got any ideas on how to fix the issue of it not lowering enough?

Option 1: You may actually be able to lower it further; my cable likes to "catch" on almost every handle turn (just noticed this yesterday since I was putting a new spare on) and I just needed to do a 1/8 turn back, full turn forward, repeat scenario several times.

Option 2: Is the spare wheel able to make contact with the ground if you lower it before you jack up the car?

Option 3: You can wrestle the spare out, you'll just have to get under it or tilt it to gain enough leverage to pull the backing plate down and then through the center of your spare (it should have a single catch that runs through one of your holes in your spare wheel).

Spray some good lube up in the mechanism and see if you can get it to lower down more, if not have a couple of 4x4 blocks for the tire to set on when you lower it.

My 2006 SPARE CARRIER - TOYOTA (51900-60280) was hardly used, the cable was the shiniest piece of metal on the truck. The mechanism was stuck though. I lowered the tire a few inches, sprayed PB Blaster on the cable and raised/lowered, repeat until it worked smoothly, the cable was plenty long for the factory height. Hope it is good for a few more inches more :heh:

So I decided to try again after seeing these replies, and it's not raining in the middle of the night. I have a gravel driveway so it wasn't fun getting muddy on the ground either. but anyway... The point about lowering the spare first before jacking up is an excellent idea, idk I didn't think of that. The cable should be long enough though regardless of that... I finally was able to see the assembly itself with some light. TALK ABOUT A BALL OF RUST! The tire was halfway to the ground and the cable was frayed and off track. I ended up having to wrestle it out.

Irony is I finally found where my limited rims went, as I bought it used and had SR5 rims on my limited (PO prob sold it with his winter wheels on...sad). This spare is BALD and It had some marks on the side wall that looked like it came from extreme heat. I doubt it was safe to drive on. --> new plan still change out the wheels and not drive it, just take my bad wheel to get a new tire on it instead of taking the whole 4runner. I'm searching high and low for my tire iron, only to see there's not one in the tool bag.... so now as you can see everything had become complicated.

Given my issue is no longer the point of this thread, I'll make my way to another ISO finding ideas on how to fix this (replace the existing assembly or finding a new way to mount my spare thats $$$ friendly). I just wanted to check back in, and say thanks to those who replied and offered help!
