How do you rmove driver's footrest in 4th gen?

I would like to remove the footrest from the left side of the driver's area. Does anyone know how to remove this darn thing. By removing this clunk of plastic, I hope to gain more foot space to stretch out my left leg. This is the tightest, crampest midsize SUV of the group.

I've pulled mine off several times so I should remember...I'm sure you just pull really hard. It's not bolted down. To replace it you just press down hard. Its held on by a white plastic clip that is pretty robust.
You might have to remove the kickpanel first which is held on by one or two small bolts.

i like that thing - the footrest. i couldnt get comfy in honda odyssey ('04) as it doesnt have that (or not insalled slightly tilted as in a 4runner). perhaps the ody designer picture you sit higher and rest the foot flat, not forward.

If the '04 is the same body style as the '02--I think '05 is the new body style, 3rd gen Ody. My uncle's '02, and if you can call it that, a "footrest". To me, it's nothing more than a 3" strip of plastic on the nearly flat floor. When he was in the market for a minivan and narrowed it down to the Ody and I was doing some research for him, there were threads on the Ody forum complain about the lack of a footrest and folks cutting strips of rubber (thick all weather mats) and making it higher.

Every Toyota I've had has had a perfect footrest and almost perfect pedal placement, the ergonomics are excellent. Although my Camry's gas and brake pedals seem a little close together, sometimes shoes, or rather boots, the extra lip in the sole catches the underside of the brake pedal. If Toyota's aren't perfect, they come very close and a whole lot closer than the competition IMO.

BTW, I don't see a problem with the foot rest permanently removed. Maybe for Husky liners... in my Taco, they're molded to fit over the footrest, so without the footrest in place, there won't be any support for the liner in the left corner. :awais:

You need to remove the black foot rest before you remove the kick panel, since the foot rest holds the kick panel in place.

In order to remove it, pry up on the right hand side and wedge your fingers under the lip and between the carpet and just tug straight out with all your might. The first couple times, It felt like it was going to brake, but it will eventually come off.

As much as I like the footrest, I wish it was a clutch instead. I wouldn't mind a 5 or 6 speed 4Runner.

I agree with you on having a 5 or 6 speed manual tranny. I have always driven a stick shifter......my 4 banger work car is a manual. I know the people who live in dense populated areas with lots of traffic probably would disagree with us but I'd still rather have my manual. I look at it as keeping my left leg muscles in shape.

Late read, still works in 2019. Thanks for the confidence to give it a solid pull without breaking it. That did the trick.

Excellent suggestion, thank you very much. Here are some pictures to reinforce this process.

As suggested already, you have to remove the debt pedal first then unscrew a plastic screw looking thing before you can remove the left kick panel. My finger is pointing at the black plastics screw looking thing.
